ESSENTIAL, well ridden and lucky, was slow to respond to urging and, coming through orj the inside with a rush near the closing eighth, tired, yet lasted. LA SALLE, probably best, was away slowly, raced ,wide, but improved his position gradually and finished fastest. WIRT G. BOWMAN, slow to start, worked his way up on the turn, but could not withstand the winner. ANNAN, in hand for half a mile, challenged, but tired in the final eighth. MELOY showed good speed from the start, slowly drew clear on the turn and, holding on gamely, outlasted PORTMANTEAU. The latter saved much ground early, but came out entering the stretch and returned to the inside in the final eighth and closed fast. NIGHT JASMINE worked her way up on the extreme outside and tired badly after five-eighths, but was best of the others. VERY WELL raced gamely. DORIS JEAN quit. KIBITZER could not get up. BABEE saved ground when moving up on the turn and, slowly wearing down BILLIES ORPHAN and BLACK NOSE, held on gamely under strong handling. HELEN BAB improved her position slowly after half a mile, saved ground in the stretch and hung on gamely. BLACK NOSE, a factor from the start, took a short lead after three-quarters, but could not withstand the leaders. SUNNY SIDEUP closed a gap on the outside in the stretch. BAPTISM had no mishaps. NEW BABY was racing well when impeded in the stretch. KITTY SUE quit. NUHAT showed early speed. BILLIES ORPHAN tired badly. YOLTINA, placed on the outside at the start, was outrun. The latter, a strong factor from the start, lost ground throughout and tired after three-quarters, but held the others safe. MRS. LET moved up weakly when hard urged after five-eighths and also tired in the late stages. PHANTASIME had no mishaps.
