GALLANT MAC, restrained for five eighths, drew out fast when urged, continued well to the final sixteenth, where RED JOHN challenged and his rider was almost caught napping. RED JOHN gained gradually under punishment and appeared hopelessly beaten entering the stretch, but responded gamely and almost overhauled the winner. SAINT, slow to get going, closed gamely. NOCTURNLABE went well for three-quarters. SLEUTH was outrun. ASHEN showed good form for five eighths. Overweight — Red John, 1 pound; Saint, 2; Ashen, 1£.
