SARATOGA SPECIAL ELIGIBLES — i » -■ Best of Americas Juveniles Named for Saratoga Fixture. Motto, Black Helen, Try Sympathy, Wizard, Flat Eye, Sun Idol and Sir Lamorak Named. — — t SARATOGA SPRINGS. N. Y., July 16.— Whatever that is new of juvenile class, the racing of the next fortnight may reveal, it is certain that today the best thought of two-year-olds of the stable of young Cornelius Vanderbilt Whitney are Motto, Wizard, Today, Mister Gander, Blackmail and Song. Willis Sharpe Kilmers smartest are Try | Sympathy, Sun Idol and Alberta; Edward Riley Bradleys are Black Helen, Balladier ! and Boxthorn; Mrs. Isabel Dodge Sloanes are Special Agent, Phychic Bid, Young Native, World Series, Shining Jewell and Step j Aside; Marshall Fields are Sir Lamorak, j Mock Turtle and Vermouth; Mrs. Helen Hay Whitneys are Plat Eye, Peradventure, : Best Butter, Sailor Beware, Insomnia and Gillie; William Woodwards are Pitter Pat, Omaha and Sir Beverley, etc. This information can be passed on with I assurance because these are the nomina-tions of their several owners for the Sara- i toga Special, the most sportsmanlike of American horse races which will be revived | here the second Saturday of the coming j August meeting. That any of the twenty- j two Special subscribers may develop better ; youngsters between this and Special day is not likely. They were not required to make j known their preferences until June 30. In i the past, they have had to name around June 1. And in the past the judgment of their trainers has been invariably vindicated. Only the most highly tried and otherwise most promising youngsters are nominated for and compete in Saratoga Specials because of the highly sportsmanlike character of the race. It is an owners sweep of 00, half forfeit. There is no purse the only | contribution of the Saratoga Association for the breed of horses being a piece ol I gold plate. The winner takes all. Some j Specials have attracted as many as seventy subscriptions and prior to 1908 the subscription was ,000, the forfeit 00. Specials I of the future may be one thousand dollar ! subscription affairs because the new deal in racing promises to restore the game, and at a very early time, to its old prestige and popularity. The subscription list is light this season because betting relief came rather late. The complete list of nominations follows: Belair Stud, William Woodward — Omaha, Pitter Pandt, Sir Beverley. E. R. Bradley — Balladier, Black Helen, Boxthorn. Brookmeade Stable, Mrs. Isabel Dodge Sloane — Special Agent, Phychic Bid, Young Native, in a first subscription; World Series, Shining Jewell and Step Aside in a second. William R. Coe — Nilus, Bluebeard and Pompeys Piller in a first subscription, Squeeze, Clean Out and Tribunal in a second. Marshall Field — Sir Lamorak. Mock Turtle and Vermouth. Glen Riddle Farm, Samuel D. Riddle-Star Shadow, Gas Bag and War Dancer. Greentree Stable, Mrs. Helen Hay Whitney — Best Butter, Plat Eye and Sailor Beware, in a first subscription; Peradventure, Gillie and Insomnia in a second. Mrs. Katherine Elkins Hitt — Sunned, Irish Colleen and Monedy. Howe Stable, Richard Howe — Nautch, Tri- i folium, Tiddlewink. Walter M. Jeffords — Martial Law, Fire- j thorn, Judy OGrady. Willis Sharpe Kilmer — Alberta, Sun Idol, Try Sympathy. Morton L Schwartz — Good Gamble, Good , Flavor, Inherit. Elmer Dale Shaffer— St. Bernard, Top Dog, Nectarine. Alfred Gwynne Vanderbilt — Bachelor Dinner, Bright Banner, Indelible. C. V. Whitney— Mister Gander, Song, and Motto in a first subscription; Today. Wizard and Blackmail in a second. Mrs. John Hay Whitney — Nice Talk, Hows Chances and Old Story. Joseph E. Widener — Shot Proof, Chance Sun and Mow Down. William Ziegler — Gold Buckle, Vaalino and Esposa. With ten competing the value of the coming Special will be ,250. The third Special paid Aristocracy 1,000, and Ariel took down 8,000 when he scored in the renewal of 1927. But ,000 and a trifle more is not to be scorned in lean times. Not improbably there will be a dozen starters. There has not been as much two-year-old racing around New York this season as in other seasons. No fear-inspiring youngster has appeared. That the coming Special will disclose the seasons champion colt or filly is more than likely. Other Specials have discovered champions in Top Flight, Jamestown, Whichone, Blue Larkspur, Chance Shot, Sunny Man, St. James, Morvich, Tryster, Sun Briar, Campfire, Dominant, Regret, Roamer, Novelty, Waldo, Sir Martin, Colin, Salvidere, Mohawk II., Sysonby and Irish Lad. Mister Gander, a son of Chicle and Flying Witch, is an own brother of Whichone, winner of the Special of 1929. He was a smart colt in Maryland in May, but he will have to show plenty if he is to start. Only one youngster of each subscription may go, and Motto, daughter of Sir Gallahad III. and Maxima, looks the best two-year-old filly so far. She beat Angelic in a Fashion revival at Belmont Park in June. Her recent triumph in the Lassie at Arlington Park pushed her winning total above 0,000. Today, a son of Whichone and Afternoon, bred on the distaff side like Which Broom II., was a brilliant performer at Belmont Park in May and June. He missed several stake dates because of bucked shins. Plat Eye, a son of Chicle and Crazy Moon, won revivals of the Juvenile and National Stallion Stakes at Belmont Park, and Peradventure, a gray daughter of Royal Minstrel and Perhaps So was good at the big course, too. Try Sympathy, a son of Tryster and Sympatica, has been cleaning up in the corn belt, his most signal achievement having been a stunning victory in the Hyde Park Stakes renewal at Arlington Park. Nilus, a chestnut son of Pennant and Cleopatra, is a half brother of Pompey, American juvenile champion of 1925. Pompey had no luck in the Special of 1925. Widener beat him with Haste. His best son so far, Ladys-man, had no better fortune in the Special of 1932. Woodwards filly, Happy Gal, beat Ladysman. Shot Proof, son of Chance Shot Special winner of 1926 and Peace, is a brother of Peace Chance, which set a new mark of 2:29 4 for the Belmont when he licked High Quest in June. Sir Lamorak, son of Sir Gallahad III. and Virginia L , is a half brother of Canter and Single Foot, both brilliant two-year-olds. Black Helen, daughter ci Black Toney and La Troienne, has been cleaning up in the corn belt under Bradleys silks, but not in stakes. She is not well engaged anywhere save at Saratoga and she will get a careful preparation for the Special. Wise Daughter, a filly by Wise Counsellor, won last seasons Special.
