1 TEXAS DERBY ELIMINATIONS Only Twelve Remain as Prospective Contestants in Saturdays Race. Roman Soldier, Whizzaway and Whiskolo Still Command Most Attention From a Betting Standpoint. ARLINGTON, Texas, April 18. Training and racing schedules completed only short "blowouts" Friday morning remain for the probable starters in the third running of the 5,000 added Texas Derby before an expected "crowd of 25,000 Saturday afternoon at Arlington Downs. The thoroughbreds will be called to the post for the mile and a furlong journey to the strains of the "Eyes of Texas." Although several eligibles were dropped from the probable field, after competition during the week, none of the leading candidates performed so dismally that their handlers were disappointed with their efforts. Of the first flight, only Whizzaway, Whiskolo and McCarthy which, with Roman Soldier and Furfiber occupy the ranking positions, were under colors during the week. Of these, Whizzaway was the only one to earn brackets, but the, efforts of Whiskolo and McCarthy were of such nature that they are still given strong consideration for honors in the big race. The Arlington Handicap definitely eliminated Hasty Glance and Back Fence will be a starter only in the event of a muddy track, J. F. Vaughan, trainer of Miss A. Morgans Wise Player could not account for the colts bad showing and said Thursday that he will wait until Friday before deciding whether he will fill his engagement. Another dropped from the probable field Thursday morning was William Hinphys Dark Woman. She is suffering from an injury received during the Epsom Downs meeting and upon advice of a veterinarian, Hinphy is giving the filly a short rest. The H. and H. Stock Farms Bill Donoghue, having demonstrated that he is not of Derby caliber, is another that will be missing from the starting field. Despite the victory Tuesday, it is not likely that T. C. Wordens Prince Splendor will be called upon for the mile and an eighth distance of the Derby. He has not travelled over six furlongs in any of his races here. The Cactus Stables Bulstrode, which finished third to McCarthy and Dark Woman in the Louisiana Derby, also is on the doubt- Continued on eighteenth page. TEXAS DERBY ELIMINATIONS Continued from first page. ful list. The Texas-bred son of Escoba has shown little here that would warrant Derby consideration. With these eliminations the probable Derby field has been narrowed to twelve starters. Of these several still are doubtful, and it is expected only eight thoroughbreds will parade to the post Saturday afternoon. Roman Soldier was again indulged in a slow mile gallop Thursday morning, and shortly after the favorite left the track, Fur-fiber went through the same routine. Whisk-olo came out later and after making the turn of the outside track, was sent back to his barn. The revised probable field, with jockeys weights and probable odds, follows: Horse. Wt. Jockey.
