1 HAVRE DE GRACE NOTES $ Alfred Gwynne Vanderbilt, Marylands leading owner last year, is off to a running start in his effort to retain his laurels: His horses, which are trained by "Buddy" Stot-ler, won six races at Bowie and four during the first two days sport here. Kentucky horsemen racing here are endeavoring to learn, why "Irish Jimmy" Stewart is taking superintendent Ross to breakfast every morning. Jennings Smallwood has taken over the book: of apprentice Jimmy Lynch, whose contract is held by George Ogle. Jimmy NeTal is an arrival from California with T. F. Swords stable, which includes Desert Call, Richstrike, Cohort Miss and Deadeye Dick. "Smokey" Saunders, contract rider for the Belair Stud, wired "Whitey" Danehauer to come to New York to make his engagements. Before leaving, "Whitey" turned apprentice C. W. Smith over to his brother, "Pep" Danehauer. "Buddy" Wingfield has been named starter for the forthcoming meeting at Aurora, 111. Turfmen are all pepped up over the scheduled meeting of the Everglade Stables Deliberator and T. D. Grimes Billie Bane in the ,500 Aberdeen next Wednesday. These two-year-olds are among the speediest shown to date. General manager Al Boyle wired Wednesday that there are eighty-five horses in training at the Charles Town, W. Va., track, which will operate from May 29 to July 4, inclusive. Racing secretary E. J. Brennan plans to release the book for Hagerstowns ten-day meeting within the next few days. Brennan, accompanied by "Ty" Shea, left Wednesday morning to handle the days racing at Mid-dleburg, Va. Every one of the 1,100 stalls at Pimlico has been allotted horsemen, the overflow being quartered at Timonium, and horses will be vanned free to Pimlico on the days they get a chance to run. Unless the entry of J. E. Wideners Chance Sun, favorite for the Kentucky Derby, is received within the next forty-eight hours, the colt will not be eligible for the 5,000 Preak-ness on May 11 at Pimlico. Secretary M. L. Daiger of the Maryland Jockey Club, plans to release the Pimlico stake nominations about Sunday. Word was received from Chicago that Wash Norvell, racing secretary on the A. "M. Orpen tracks in Ontario, is gaining in health and expects to leave for the Canadian, city early in May to complete plans for the Dufferin Park and Long Branch meetings. Drawn Sword, entered for Thursdays racing in the name of the Warm Stable, ran in the silks of Mrs. Silas B. Mason. George Woolf will come on from Texas to ride T. D. Grimes Billie Bane in. the ,500 Aberdeen on Wednesday. The Wheatley Stables Thisway was an arrival from New York and will be trained by George Tappan.
