QUICKLY AND JOCKEY WATSON Prove Winning Combination in Hum-ber Handicap, Feature of Long Branchs Opening Day. TORONTO, Ont., June 5. Packing 118 pounds and conceding chunks of weight to seasoned, sprinters, Quickly, racing in the silks of J. E. Smallman, took down the lions share of the ,000 Humber Handicap, a test of six furlongs, that featured the opening program of the Long Branch Jockey Club today. Opposed by her formidable opponents, the fleet daughter of Haste achieved her success in a thrilling drive to land major honors by a neck in advance of Projectile, from the H. C. Hatch barn, with St. Moritz garnering third in the closing stages when he was up to take a head verdict over the Parkwood Stables Donna Julia. Easter Hatter was the only other starter when the field vas reduced to five with the late withdrawals of Canterboy, a stablemate of the winner, and Jewell Brothers Friend Charley. In the feature little time was wasted before a good start took place for the five under silks, and it found Donna Julia stepping out into the lead with the Smallman miss alongside and heading Projectile and Easter Hatter. For the first half mile this order was maintained, although it was apparent that Quickly would be able to join the Parkwood miss at the asking. All were going strongly behind Donna Julia as the home stretch was neared and with the field closing in steadily Donna Julia was quickly shaken up to meet the onrush. H. Black was handling his mount perfectly, but his endeavors to keep the Parkwood miss, from running out proved beyond his powers. Straightening into the stretch, Quickly soon displaced the light weight of the field and in a desperate drive R. Watson, achieving his second riding success, kept the ebony-hued mare going long enough to get in premier honors. Projectile, in his stubborn engagement with the winner, was carried seven lengths in advance of St. Moritz and Donna Julia a head farther back to easily lead Easter Hatter. Rain at intervals failed to detract from the sport furnished.
