CLIPSETTA STAKES SATURDAY Large Number of Two-Year-Old Fillies Expected to Meet in Old, Established Fixture. LATONIA, Ky., June 5. The Clipsetta Stakes, for two-year-old fillies, the oldest fixture in America for performers of that sex, will have its fifty-third renewal Saturday at Latonia. Run annually since 1883, the Clipsetta has among its winners some of the illustrious matrons of the present-day breeding establishments, which made turf history in the past. Prior to 1926 the distance for this stake was five-eighths, but since then it has been lengthened to five and one-half furlongs. At the closing of nominations, there were seventy-one eligible for the Clipsetta, and of this number, thirty or more are being prepared to fill the engagement, which indicates the field might exceed any that has vied for the honors of annexing this historic race. It is unlikely that there will be any great number of invaders from other points, the only one that has signalled their intention of sending contestants is Mrs. Ethel V. Mars. That popular Chicago sportswoman is ever ready to contribute to the sport in this Kentucky region, and her representatives will be Torolee and Forever Yours, which are the progeny of Toro. The latter sire died last year. Wise Counsellor, which has provided the last three winners of the Clipsetta, has no representative this year. The Clipsetta carries an added value of ,500 and in the event there are fifteen starters, the race would gross ,605, of which the winner would receive 52,775. At this time it would be difficult to predict a post-time favorite. 9
