With the seventeenth running of the historic Great Western Handicap close at hand, a field of at least sixteen for the ,000 added mile and a furlong event is in prospect, and enough of them come from among the higher weighted eligibles to make the fixture figure as the most open stake which is likely to be offered at Washington Park this season. The present outlook is for A. A. Baronis Top Row to go to the post as favorite. Stand Pat, the Seagram four-year-old that conquered Azucar at Detroit a week ago, has not been heard from, and in consequence racing secretary Charles McLennan is leaving the horse out of his calculations. Stand Pat was assigned top weight of 124 pounds. It is the dockers, who have been peering at his workouts in the early morning haze, that have ousted the Northway Stables Riskulus from the post of favorite which his past performances would appear to make him deserve. They assert that while Riskulus has been working rather slowly, Top Row has been moving like a sharp horse, and they believe he will take Riskulus measure when they meet. If Top Row is as fit as the split second brigade claims the long standing record of 1:50 for a mile and an eighth, made at Washington Park in 1929, may be in danger, for Top Row showed that he has a world of speed by setting a new worlds record of 1:42 for a mile and a sixteenth at Bay Meadows last fall. Two Washington Park stakes winners are regarded as certain starters. Biff won the Chicago Handicap at long odds on opening day; Evergold was the victor over a good field in the Blue and the Gray Memorial on Memorial Day. Serious threats, too, are the C. V. Whitney pair of The Darb and High Glee that will arrive on Friday morning.
