HORSEMEN DISAPPOINT WINN Refuse to Fill Latonia Entries Despite Raise in Value of Purses Over Last Year. LATONIA, Ky., June 5. Col. Matt J. Winn, always in favor of elevating the standards of racing, is rather disappointed with the reluctant manner in which the horsemen are filling the races at Latonia. In the face of a heavy loss sustained in the conduct of the last meeting here, Colonel Winn voluntarily raised the purses for the current meeting and while the increase of the purses was not warranted, the genial Latonia executive is willing to risk the hazard of another loss. The patronage for the present meeting has exceeded that of last year and it is very discouraging for Winn and his assistants when they are not obtaining the co-operation of the owners. There has been a rumor of reducing the purses if present conditions continue, and while it is known that that act would be against the principles of the organization, it might have to be done if there is not more stimulation in the filling of the programs presented. With so many tracks operating at this time, Latonia, like other racing grounds, is suffering from a lack of higher grade performers. Yet, Latonia has. a good number of the better grade performers, in fact many more than other courses, and for this reason Winn cannot understand why the fields are so small, and exceedingly so in the races for the lower grade performers. There will be a meeting of Latonia directors today to determine what course shall be pursued if the races do not fill better.
