j COLD SHOULDER IN j j SENSATIONAL WORKOUT i... . ...... .. NEW YORK, N. Y., June 5. The dockers sat up and took notice when J. H. Stotler gave A. G. Vanderbilts Cold Shoulder his trial at a mile and a half for the Belmont Stakes early Wednesday morning. The son of Display and Glacial surprised the watchers of the works when he ran the full Belmont distance in 2:29, going on for the mile and five-eighths in 2:44. He covered the first half in :47, the three-quarters in 1:12, the mile in 1:37, and the mile and a quarter in 2:03. If Cold Shoulder only lives up to this work next Saturday, he will be one horse that will make trouble for Omaha and all the others. The Alfred Gwynne Vanderbilt three-year-old was guided by Sammy Renick in the trial as he will be in the Belmont on Saturday.. The work evoked great enthusiasm among horsemen, and it was one of the chief topics of conversation during the afternoon. Other sensational trials of former years were brought to mind, notably that of Bunting, which the late Jimmy Rowe worked for the Brooklyn Handicap, when that Whitney star was timed the one and a quarter in 2:02. American Flag, which worked in sensation style for the Glen Riddle Farm, and latest of all, Cavalcade in his prep for the Suburban. Owner Vanderbilt and trainer Stotler were jubilant over the colt and the manner in which he finished out his task. Cold Shoulder had plenty left, according to competent observers. A forecast for the field for the Belmont Stakes elicits the information that the field will be less than eight starters. Omaha, which is held a prohibitive choice in the future quotations, will be the main reliance of the Belair Stud, which may also be representor by Sir Beverley. Rosemont will carry the colors of the Foxcatcher Farms, while Firethorn. will be the main reliance of the Jeffords family. North Wales H. was worked one and one-half miles this morning in easy fashion, but his worked was overshadowed by that of Cold Shoulder.
