PARADISICAL BIG SURPRISE Scores. Impressively at Detroit to Win Self ridge Field Handicap. Leads Home Our Mae, Rock X. and. Trans-mutable Wild. Pigeon Another to Win Unexpectedly. DETROIT, Mich., June 5. Paradisical, Kentucky Oaks winner and a consistent performer during the Florida and Kentucky seasons, registered her first triumph here when she carried the silks of I. J. Collins, Ohio sportsman and racing commissioner, to a surprise victory in the Selfridge Field Handicap, which topped the Detroit program here this afternoon. Unable to keep Tip during the opening half mile of the three-quarters sprint, the winner charged through the stretch to be a length and one-half before Mrs. A. M. Creechs Our Mae at the end. C. W. Shaw, Jr.s Frisky Matron, a- winner of her last race and a 8 -to 5 choice, was third, two lengths in the wake of Our Mae and a half length before Rock X., which labored throughout under his top impost of 119 pounds. Transmutable followed the four to the finish After the unruly Frisky Matron had caused a good delay, the field went away in straggling order, with Our Mae gaining a big advantage at the start. However, she was unable to keep up with the. speedy Frisky Matron and -Transmutable, and gave way rapidly after leaving the far turn. Saving ground while racing forwardly, Transmutable had Frisky Matron headed as -the field reached the final quarter, but the favorite came again, to be clear of the others shortly after reaching the stretch. After relinquishing the lead, Transmutable tired fast and it was no task for Our Mae, the winner and Rock X. to overhaul him during the run through the stretch. Paradisical carried 104 pounds, was ridden by H. Manifold and covered the distance over the slow strip in 1:15. Another rainy day prevailed for the attractive mid-week program, but, despite showers again falling at the time patrons left for the track, an unusually large crowd was on hand for the sport. The racing stripwas in a. slow condition. Favorites enjoyed a banner afternoon, with a majority of the winners reaching the end of their engagements by big margins. PARADISICAL BIG SURPRISE Continued from first page. in the opening three races, the Silver Stock Farms Wild Pigeon brought their streak to a halt when he was returned an easy winner of the Irish Hills Handicap, a Grade C affair that supported the feature. Under the light impost of 102 pounds and ridden by F. Mas-chek, Wild Pigeon reached the end of the silt furlongs two lengths before G. T. Williams Slapped, which led the Saddle Spur Stables Gold Step by three lengths at the close. Kieva, a heavily supported choice,, quit rapidly after leading the field out of the back stretch. Aunt Flor made it two in a row for the choices and scored her second straight victory in leading Rizla, Ladino and five others to the finish of the Monroe Purse, which served as the second race. Taking command soon after the start of the six furlongs sprint, the four-year-old Our General filly carried Mrs. Sam Orrs silks to the finish three and a half lengths before Rizla, which beat Ladino a nose for second. The incompetency of apprentice F. Ritz caused the defeat of Vanita, a 9 to 10 choice for the mile Port Huron Purse. She reached the endof the eight furlongs a nose back of Hammel and but for weak riding probably would have been the winner. Third went to Plucky Baby. While Hammel was making every post a winning one, Ritz allowed the favorite to drop far out of contention and when she began to improve her position he sent Vanita to the extreme outside of the track. Finishing gamely under her own courage, Vanita was fast wearing the winner down when the finish wal reachedj
