SDN PORTLAND THE LEADER Victory in Illinois Derby Worth ,570 to Mrs. Mason. Fox Valley Jockey Club Enjoys Successful Season With Big Crowd and Good Play in Mutuels. Aurora, opening the Illinois season on; May 1, indicated through its successful meeting that it was probably the forerunner of the best season in Illinois for all tracks in four or five years. The Fox Valley Jockey Club, despite a few bad breaks in weather, attracted big crowds and a good-mutuel play, distributing 0,670 during its twenty-one days which ended on May 24. The daily average in prizes disbursed was ,317.62. The victory of Sun Portland in the Illinois Derby, in which he surprised with a triumph over the highly-regarded Roman Soldier, gave his owner and himself first place among the money-winning owners and horses, respectively.
