SILVERETTE IN FRONT Runs Six Furlongs in 1:11 to Win Grosse Pointe County Club Purse. Carries Colors of Garrett Watts to Easy and Popular Victory Over Preeminent and Beth Bon. DETROIT, Mich., June 12. Running the six furlongs in 1:11, which came within a fifth of a second of equalling the track mark, Silverette carried the colors of Garrett Watts, Kentucky breeder and owner, to an easy and popular victory in the Grosse Pointe Country Club Purse, the main attraction offered at Detroit this afternoon. Hal Price Headleys Preeminent, which trailed the small field of four for five-eighths, got up to beat the tiring Beth Bon by a head for second. Sweep Like, the third choice in the wagering, was last. Under 103 pounds and completing a double for Johnny Mattioli, Silverette was saved when the speedy Beth Bon and Sweep Like went out to show the way. Nearing the final quarter, Silverette moved into second place and, steadily wearing Beth Bon down, forged to the front in the last eighth to reach the finish three and a half lengths before the fast-finishing Preeminent. Sweep Like tired during the run through the stretch. Swelled by the advance guard of Derby visitors, the largest week-day gathering of the meeting was present for the attractive program, which was enlivened by several spirited finishes and formful racing. Nine two-year-olds, the majority of which will be under colors for the Moslem Temple Stakes, to be contested here Saturday next, met over five furlongs in the fourth and supporting attraction, and it resulted in the most thrilling finish of the afternoon when J. Van Winkles Gene Wagers and E. F. Seagrams Rebecca Lee reached the end a SILVERETTE IN FRONT Continued on thirty-eighth page. nose apart. Dunnamany was third, two and one-half lengths back of the leading pair and a length before Miss Bonnie. Gene Wagers ran the distance in the sparkling time of 1:00. Rebecca Lee, which was backed down from 10 to 1 to 2 to 1, was the first under way. Earl Porter had Gene Wagers right with her, and the pair raced as a team far in the van of the others. Entering the stretch Rebecca Lee carried the winner extremely wide, and but for this, Gene Wagers margin at the finish probably would have been greater. Dunnamany was always best of the others, with Miss Bonnie holding fourth place from the start. In a finish that found the first four horses slightly more than a length apart at the end, Cruising, from Mrs. H. W. Stewarts stable, emerged the winner of the fifth race, also over six furlongs. Indiantown was second, a half length before Crout au Pot, which got up to beat Genteel Lady by a nose for minor honors. Merry Caroline, which bore out throughout, was fifth. Seven top-notch sprinting platers were under colors, with Indiantown, which was showing improvement, taking command soon after the start. Our David was right with him with the winner holding the others safe. Entering the stretch, Cruising was shuffled back, but after being steered to the outside, steadily wore down the leaders to gain the decision over Indiantown at the finish. During the final furlong Our David quit badly, and Crout au Pot drove down on the outside to nip Genteel Lady for minor honors. Cruising carried 116 pounds, one less than Odd Blue, which trailed the others throughout. The time was 1:11. Showing improvement over his previous effort, Skippy "McGee was a surprise winner of the first race for which Mah Grant was a heavily supported choice. Fair Time was second and All Night third. At the end of the six furlongs Skippy McGee, which raced head and head with Fair Time to the final furlong was a length before the latter which held the same advantage over All Night at the close. In close quarters during the opening three furlongs Mah Grant was taken to the inside for the drive and the finish found her a nose back of All Night and a length before Miss Twinkling.
