RED WAGON WINS wMF Sands Colorbearer Surprises . Fans at Rockingham Park. - Slightly .Neglected Due to His Known Dislike for Bad Footing Rainy Weather " . arid Small Crowd. SALEM, N. "H., June 12. In. the five-horse field that paraded ijdr the Haverhill Claiming Stakes, five-furlong event that featured todays sport over a sloppy trapk at Rockingham, there was one horse that sup? : posedly could not run in the mud. He was Red Wagon, from the Samuel S. Sands sta- ble, and Red Wagon was the horse that won in the slop, which is probably a commentary on the uncertainty of horse racing. Far classier fields have gone postward here than this one, but seldom has a better matched band paraded. That was reflected in the odds. There was only four points difference between the favorite and the extreme outsider, and at one stage, of the betting the five were equal choices. . The finish was, as might be expected, a close one. Red Wagon won by a neck over Mrs. V. Wyses Bachelor Dinner, with, Mrs. A. M. Creechs Candy Maid a .half; length back in third place. Hope to Do finished fourth, another length and a half back, beating Character, the only other starter, by a length. Johnny Manns ride was directly responsible for Red Wagons victory. Knowing of his mounts dislike for the going, he took him to the middle of the track, and the firmest footing. He began in front in order to choose his course. Bachelor Dinner took the lead in the stretch as Mann took his mount to the middle of the track and would have beaten him had not Mc-Dermott swerved in to the rail. That defeated Bachelor Dinner. Red Wagon, Bachelor Dinner and Candy Maid were charging like a team, but Bachelor Dinner had the worst of the going. Red Wagon came again in the last fifty yards to get the decision under Manns urging. Bachelor Dinner, seemingly the best horse and the victim of a poorly judged ride, stuck it out to beat Candy Mai right at the end. They traveled the distance in 1:01, The crowd was the lightest of the meeting, and the handle the lowest. It was the first rainy day that Rockingham has encountered this meeting. Capt. Yarbrough led the way in the fourth, a five furlongs heat. The Fred Coppa campaigner, rated back of the pacemaking by Kamar until the middle of the stretch, collared the Mrs. P. Corning racer a sixteenth out and held a short lead from that point home, proving gamer in the drive than his rival. C. W. Phelans Sis Royal, off very slowly and far back early, closed ground in the stretch to take the third award. Direct set the pace until they reached the final sixteenth, with the winner always in closest pursuit. Robins Cove was third in the early running but faded after that. Baladine was well supported but did not appear to relish the going. The victor scored by a neck in l:02y3.
