. . ... -T Here and There on the Turf Derby Looks Like Three-Horse Affair Split Second May Make Trou-: tie Roman Soldier Has Tough Job Discovery Awaits Brooklyn Handicap i I The three-year-old situation being what it is, a rather small field will go to the post" this afternoon for the third running of the Detroit Derby, even though the imposing sum of 5,000 is added to the event. However, the race may be well worth watching with Rushaway, Hollyrood and Split Second as the principals. Rushaway has become a very popular horse because of his feat of winning the Illinois and Latonia Derbys on successive days and very likely he will be the favorite in todays affair over the mile and three-sixteenths route. A. G. Tarns gelding was beaten the other day in track record time but he was hardly disgraced and undoubtedly needed the effort to have him .right for his Detroit Derby engagement as little had been done with him since his pair of hard races. Because of his stake triumphs, the Widener cast-off is called upon to carry 123 pounds, or four more than the impost of his opponents, with the exception of Split Second, which gets a further five pound allowance because of her sex. Hollyrood, which finished second to Rushaway in the Latonia Derby, may give the Haste gelding a sterner battle today because he is believed to be in better condition now. Hal Price Headleys colt didnt fare well in his spring training and was given a let up until just before the Preakness, when he displayed sharp improvement in his training. In the Pimlico stake he showed a creditable performance and was shipped to I Continued on thirty-fifth page. : 1 I I , I J ; I 1 . : , 1 j ? HERE AND THERE ON THE TURF Continued from second page. Kentucky for the Latonia Derby, in which he took secondary honors. The following Saturday the son of High Cloud and Mandy Hamilton went against the leaders of his division in the Belmont Stakes and wound up in thrid place, well beaten by Granville and Mr. Bones, but finishing ahead of Corundum, Brevity, Memory Book, Teufel, Jean Bart, Red Rain and Isolater. A repetition of his Belmont effort may be good enough to gain victory at Detroit. The chances of Split Second are to be respected, even though the daughter of Sortie and One Hour is going against the colts for the first time this season. Split Second was second in the Coaching Club American Oaks and third in the Acorn Stakes, giving weight to those which beat her both times. With only 114 pounds on her back, the King Ranch filly can cause Rushaway, Hollyrood and the others in the Derby field plenty of trouble. A comparison of the time made in the Belmont Stakes and the Coaching Club American Oaks docs not give Hollyrood much of an edge, if any, over Split Second. The Oaks was run in 2:19 and the Sortie filly, carrying scale weight of 121 pounds, was beaten less than a length. The first mile and three furlongs of the Belmont Stakes was timed in 2:17 and Hollyrood was five lengths back of the pacemaker, doing his best. He was. farther back of Granville and Mr. Bones at the finish. If anything the Belmont track was faster for the Belmont Stakes than for the Oaks because of a drenching shower and considerable sprin- kling in between the two races. Trainer Max Hirsch knows what hes doing in sending Split Second after the Detroit Derby. With Alfred Vanderbilt and trainer J. H. Stotler deciding against asking Discovery to shoulder 136 pounds in his first effort of the summer, the Rockingham Park Handi-1 cap loses the vast amount of interest a clash between the Display veteran and Roman Soldier would have created. The 0,000 event at a mile and one furlong, nevertheless, should attract a capacity crowd to the Salem course for the closing of the meeting this afternoon because Roman Soldier is called upon for a stupendous task in carrying 133 pounds against such good horses as Good Goods, Identify, Howard, Black Gift and the others in the field. Elwood Sachsenmaiers good colt, beaten in four starts as a four-year-old, has gained a large following in New England because of his performances there and the public will be rooting for him today in what appears to be a more difficult assign-j ment than anything hes had so far this year. Discoverys first appearance of the sum-i mer may be expected before long as he has been working steadily for some time and is ready for action. His next stake engagement of importance is the Brooklyn Handicap, which is to be renewed at Aqueduct on Juno 27 and very probably the son of Display and Ariadne will be sent out in a preliminary beforehand if racing secretary John B. Campbell can get one to fill. The last time he had Discovery in a race there was only one other entrant so the event had to be called off. Discoverys connections arc at a loss to understand why the handi- cappers continue to assign such large im- posts, considering the manner in which he failed under 130 pounds and 138 pounds respectively in his last two starts.
