HIGH FLEET TAKES HANDICAP ! K . Completes Double for G. D. Wide- J ner Silks at Aqueduct. r Rain Makes Footing Sloppy but Fast Time Is Made Malign Accounts for Purse in Opener. j NEW YORK, N." Y June 12. George D. J W.ideners High Fleet, winner of the Coach- ! ing Club American Oaks over Split Second, j was winner of the best offering at Aqueduct today when she scored in the Blossom-time Handicap, for fillies and mares. Setting all the pace, the daughter of Jack High stuck it out gamely to beat Louis Strubes , Rust, with Kate, from the Howe Stable, beating William Woodwards Valse, the only J other starter, for third. While the rain of Thursday night made the track a bit sloppy as is always the case . at Aqueduct, fast time was in order, for rain always improves the going when there : is not too much rain. A big crowd was in attendance and there was the usual inter- ! est in the six offerings. In the Blossomtime Handicap, High Fleet ! caused some delay at the post by reason of : her unruly actions, but the start was a good ; one and Gilbert lost no time sending her into command with Kate and Valse following closely and Rust, never alert in the early stages, trailing the other three, but well within striking distance. Valse was first to find the pace too stiff, and while Gilbert still had High Fleet under slight restraint, the Woodward filly began to drop back, while Kate and Rust held to the task in resolute fashion. In making a close turn in the stretch, Gilbert took High Fleet through a part of the course covered with water, but she splashed right along without shortening stride or losing her lead. In the final furlong, Rust began to race in earnest, and she was soon alongside Kate, and then past to challenge the daughter of Jack High. Gilbert was wide awake to the danger, and he roused his mount sharply. She answered the call and at the line was still half a length to the good. Rust had beaten Kate a like distance, and Valse quit so badly she was another six lengths back. This completed a double for the Widener ailks, Malign having won the first. The Cherry Grove Purse, five furlongs dash for juveniles, brought a fast race when Manatella, the daughter of The Satrap, that races for William Dupont, raced in :58 to win with plenty to spare over Jungle Chase, that carried the silks of Alvin Untermyer, while Maecloud, from the Maemere Farm Stable, just saved third from Devils Banner. Manatella had an abundance of speed and leaving the post in good style, dominated all the running, while Jungle Chase went after her closely. They both saved ground on the inside and right at the end the filly was drawing away to be winner by two lengths. Devils Banner left the post slowly and was pocketed through the early running. He finished going well but was beaten a head for third by the High Cloud filly. There came another call for the film at the finish of the six and a half furlongs dash for platers that was the fifth offering, when H. Neusteters Masked Gal and Mrs. Robert H. Heighes Zay crossed the line closely lapped before Star Portex, the favorite. These two fillies that fought it out were both taken to positions outside the machine and they were both away so badly that the race was that much more remarkable. The photograph showed Zay the winner and Star Porter was three lengths back of the pair. Chancing was first to show the way, but Masked Gal was rushed up with such a dash of speed that she soon was with him. As the filly went to the front Chancing was badly knocked back and then Zay loomed up in the contention. Star Porter in the meantime was caught in close quarters and was having a decidedly rough trip.
