LAT0NIA TURF NOTES 4 C. R. Valentine announced he has taken over the four-year-old chestnut gelding First Try to train for Allen and Wells. The son of North Star III. was formerly trained by F. Cropper. First call on the services of jockey A. Fernandez has been obtained by C. H. Ferguson .for the remainder of the Latonia meeting. The agreement was reached Friday morning Since graduating from the ranks of maiden jockeys a few days ago, apprentice Tommy Dickinson is much in demand at the local track. The 20-year-old Guthrie, Ky., lad can scale as low as 102 pounds. The new method of placing all horses that comprise an entry in a single group, regardless of the post position drawn on the program, is proving popular with racing fans in this section. It is probable that the system will be adopted at other tracks. Jockey Willie Carroll arrived from Rockingham Park and made application for a license to ride at Latonia. He expects to swing into action Monday. Daniel E. OSullivan, resident manager of Churchill Downs, was a visitor at Latonia Saturday afternoon, returning to Louisville following the running of the days program. Apprentice Tommy Dickinson, who has been riding in excellent form recently, was hit in the eye while astride Military Lass Friday and the injury necessitated sending the boy to St. Elizabeths Hospital for treatment. Smith G. Baker, Sr., trainer of the R. L. Baker thoroughbreds, departed Saturday morning for Lexington, Ky., where he will remain over the week-end, returning to Latonia Monday. J. C. Gillem, acting for Mrs. J. C. Gillem, purchased the three-year-ld colt Gray Jack from Mrs. J. L. Carrick at private terms. Gillem also reported that he has taken over the two-year-bid filly Miss Adams to train for "Dixie" McKinley. Jockey Earl Pool, who injured his leg on Score, Friday, underwent treatment by a chiropractor and expects to be sufficiently recovered to resume riding Monday afternoon. Racing secretary W. H. Shelley of the Latonia Jockey Club made his weekly pilgrimage to Louisville to spend the week-end with his family. The fourth issue of the Latonia condition book will be ready for distribution either Monday or Tuesday morning, according to secretary Shelley.
