WMNT FH1Y BIG andRJRISE Jean Lee Accounts for Suff ield Purse at Agawam Increase in Handle in Mutuels. AGAWAM, Mass., June 23. Jean Lee carried the green and white caped silks of Mrs. W. C. Weant to a surprise victory in the SuffieJd Purse, a six furlongs sprint offered as the feature attraction on the card here at Agawam Park this afternoon. Ridden by the clever apprentice A. Jolley, the son of Jean Valjean was all out to score by a neck from R. W. Perkins Fredrick, which was second, while Mrs. Nanc.olas Mcrovech accounted for third over the public choice, Dogmata. There was some delay at the gate, caused by Mahi, but the start found the field leaving as one, with Lady Pal on the inside position and Merovech racing to the front fighting to set the early pace. Jolley, though avay well, wisely permitted the former pair to race each other into submission, restraining his mount until they had reached the far turn before asking for its best. By the. time the turn had been reached Lady Pal was through and Merovech showed in front. Then Jolley made his move with the son of Jean Valjean, coming from third position to be lapped on the leader before they had reached the turn into the home stretch. Merovech held on gamely for a few strides, but Jean Lee was not to be denied, steadily creeping past until he was a neck to the good at the twenty-yard post. This he increased to a half length in the final struggle, but Merovech still stuck gamely, though the early efforts proved his undoing as Fredrick, finishing fast on the outside, also got up to get the camera decision for the place. It looked, to many in the press stand, as if Merovech, next to the inner rail, still had a slight advantage, but the never-failing camera angle of the outside horse again showed that Fredrick was second. More delightful weather could not have been asked for, with the result a banner crowd was on hand to witness the sport Later in the day a cool breeze came up that swept the stands and lawn. With the return of good weather the handle in the mutuel pool showed an increase. Jockey E. Johnson had the thrill of winning both halves of the "Daily Double" when he brought Stool Pigeon- home first in the third race, having previously won with Miss" Epe in the first. The winner never left the result in doubt at any time, taking the lead at the start and leading for the entire six furlongs, passing the judges stand some five lengths in front of Below Cost, which was second. The latter, in turn, led Real Jam, which was third. The forty lucky holders of winning "Daily Double" tickets received the liberal reward of 20.80 for their investment of .
