Columbus Day wilbe fittingly celebrated at Jamaica Monday when the Metropolitan Jockey Club offers the Interborough Handicap and the Long Island Claiming Stakes. The Interborough is a dash of six furlongs to which ,000 is added and, with the promised six going to the post, it will gross ,410, and the Claiming Stakes of a mile and one-sixteenth, with its ,500 added, has five named to perform, bringing its value to ,310. Both fields are representative and the best sprinters in training are-to meet in the Interborough, with Victor Emanuels Miss Merriment at the top under a burden of 126 pounds. Miss Ethel V. Mars The Fighter, victim of a recent disqualification, has to shoulder 119 pounds and his last race proves his fitness. Mrs. W. Plunkett Stewarts Mower has a burden of 118 pounds, and Mrs. Marian Cassidys Bill Farnsworth is in nicely at 114 pounds. The other two in this remarkable field are John Simonettis Sgt. Byrne, which was declared winner by the disqualification of The Fighter, and Emileo, which races for the Orienta Stable. Emileo carries 117 pounds and Sgt. Byrne is in under 116. It would be hard to find a shiftier lot of sprinters at any season ,of the year, and the nice arrangement of weights by handicap-per Campbell makes certain a rare race, provided weather and track conditions are favorable. The five that are named for the Long Island Claiming Stakes are Thorson, Whizz-away, Abner, Quel Jeu and Jesting. The setting for the two holiday specials is an interesting one, with seven races offered, and fields are of good size and nicely balanced.
