MUSCATINE, stoutly handled after moving into a short lead entering the back stretch, raced ABBOTS HOUR into submission, responded to severe punishment when straightened into the stretch and rallied nicely to come out right at the end. MELODIANA improved her position on the outside to reach the leaders and fought it out gamely. ABADDON, very sluggish after the start, raced into contention hurriedly approaching the final turn, but failed to gain in the final drive. BOMAR was never formidable. ABBOTS HOUR, under strong handling early, flattened out badly in the last five-sixteenths. BRIEF was held safe. The others were outrun. SECOND RACE 1-2 MII.K. Enchantment, April 22, 1922 :47 2 116. ACTRESS gained her racing stride quickly to race in pursuit of the early pacemaker, swung very wide nearing the stretch, was straightened out nicely and finished resolutely to draw away under pressure at the close. IRRESOLUTE displayed good speed while setting the pace, saved ground, but tired when the real test came. BOJANGLES, slow to get into full stride, worked his way forward, but could not menace during the late stages. DARK FLYER challenged stoutly at the stretch turn, but faltered during the closing i drive. TOP COAT raced evenly. SHALAKO was outrun. SANDID was held safe. BROKEN RHYTHM was outrun. JINX took command immediately after the start, responded courageously after being momentarily overhauled midway cf the stretch and came clear at the end under stout urging. EARLY BROOM, in the thick of contention, challenged boldly entering the stretch, raced into a short lead on the inside, but hung in the final eighth. OUR CREST was rated close to the leaders, bore out badly when reaching the stretch and could not gain under hard urging. HAPPY HAZEL was stoutly ridden all the way and showed a good effort throughout. TRAUWINA was unable to enter contention at any stage. BARN STORMER was used up in the early running. SIAM, outrun in the early stages, gained fast when shaken up vigorously in the last three-sixteenths, came to the outside to engage the leaders and. finishing determinedly after taking command inside the final eighth, drew away under light pressure. DASHING DOE displajed good speed to stall off GRAND PLAY in the early running, saved much ground, hut could not withstand the winner. GRAND PLAY was stoutly handled while forcing the pace, but tired after going five-eighths. LINAS SON could not improve his position when put to a hard drive. UPPER BERTH was never a factor. HUNTERDON, permitted to settle into his best stride before moving into contention, gained fast in the last half mile and, closing strongly on the outside, was up in the concluding strides. LITTLE ARGO was on the inside of CEASELESS going to the first turn, assumed command midway of the back stretch, saved ground and fought it out stubbornly in the closing test. EL PUMA worked his way up steadily and finished gamely. HIT AND RUN finished with good courage, but could not make up any ground. SCATTER BRAIN fell far out of contention and was never dangerous. GAY DOG raced STARWINK into submission in the first three-quarters, saved ground, but could not stay with the winner when caught. IRISH VOTE came to the outside in the last half mile and closed gamely. EUDES moved to contention at the final turn, but tired in the final test. MORE PEP began tiring early. FOPO, rated far back of the early leaders, moved up very fast on the final turn and finished stoutly. MISS TAD, rated within reach of the early leaders, finished with good courage. JIM BROWN lacked early speed, but finished gamely. ADAMITE flashed early speed, but tired. JIM JOHN raced evenly. METTLE quit. LADY CARROT could not keep up.
