t LOUISVILLE TURF NOTES f s Col. H. Maxwell Howard, whose two Derby candidates, Scencshifter and Fencing, are training here under the direction of Earl Sande, is expected here for the opening of the local season on May 1. He will remain until after the running of the Derby. Besides Military Lass, a two-year-old owned by Mike Auers, and Rudie, a three-year-old owned by W. H. Gallagher, Fred Kraft is training two older horses and eight youngsters for Phil T. Chinn at Douglas Park. The older horses in the establishment are Major Bowes and Spurlin, both three-year-olds, while the juveniles are Miss Hopeful, Polaris, Garcia, Rock High, Garden Pool, Gladys Gold, Mark Hellinger and Lovick. Sam MacPherson got in from Hot Springs with one horse, the three-year-old filly Chanting, which races under the colors of Mrs. MacPhersan. The Ridgebrook Stable, maintained by A. C. Mack, M. E. Nelson and G. M. Nelson, embraces four head trained by J. Harney. Besides the two-year-old grey colt. Grey Mack, by Kiev and Wega, there are the three-year-olds Mere Blaze, Terra Cotta and Hustle Along. A division of the Brentwood Stable arrived at Douglas Park from Nashville, Tenn., in charge of trainer C. W. Caldwell. Five of the six horses have never yet faced the barrier, the lone starter being Fay Murray, a four-year-old. Tom Young, Churchill Downs track superintendent, has set aside stalls for twelve horses owned by the Calumet Farm and trained by F. J. Kearns. Included in the string, of course, will be the Kentucky Derby eligibles, Galsun and Gosum.
