THREE-YEAR-OLD PROSPECTS OF 1937 I TEDIOUS, chestnut colt, by Teddy Duration, by Hourless; property of A. G. Vanderbilt. Bred to stay, Tedious may prove much better, his race in the Santa Anita Derby indicates, and if sent to the post in the Kentucky Derby, may prove a dangerous opponent for the more fancied eligibles for the famous race. By NORBIS KOTDEN - - - 4 After the running of the Hopeful Stakes, in which Tedious finished third over a track he did not fancy, Alfred Gwynne Vanderbilt and J. H. Stotler were convinced they had a good colt In the chestnut son of Teddy and Duration, by Hourless, but he has yet to race to that promise. Tedious, a fine-looking, big colt, made his first start June 30 at Aqueduct in a five furlongs dash, in which he finished boldly to finish third to Fencing and Forty Winks, beaten a length. The time was :59. Two weeks later he graduated by six lengths in a five furlongs event at Empire City, the time being 1:00. He came from behind entering the stretch to draw away rapidly over Jackinthebox, General Markham and other promising maidens. Kept inactive for more than a month, the Vanderbilt colt next appeared in -the Albany Handicap at Saratoga, in which he bore down steadily in the stretch to run second to Biologist, losing by a half length as Belle Elan was third and Melodist fourth. This effort put him in readiness for the Hopeful Stakes. A sloppy track prevailed for Saratogas most important event for juveniles, and Tedious plainly demonstrated that he did not care for the going, yet he held on with excellent courage to take third honors back of Maedic and Billionaire, while finishing ahead of Sir Damion, Galsun and other good colts. His connections were hopeful he would give Pompoon a stiff argument In the Junior Champion Stakes at Aqueduct, but although making trouble from the start he was unable to hold either the Louchheim star or Flying Scot in the stretch, finishing third eleven lengths back of the winner. Shifting his activity to Maryland. Tedious was a starter in the Eastern Shore Handicap, in which he raced in the middle of the pack throughout to finish seventh, about eight lengths back of War Admiral. That completed his racing as a two-year-old and he was sent to Sagamore Farm to be turned out, resuming training upon his arrival at Santa Anita Park just before the turn of the year. With the Santa Anita Derby as his western objective, the Vanderbilt colt made his first start as a three-year-old in a six furlongs dash, in which he made up nearly four lengths in the last eighth to win by a neck over Bagpipe, with Air Chute third and Jargo fourth. Tedious then finished second to Sir Oracle in a mile contest, in which Fairy Hill went unplaced, but in the Santa Anita Derby running he was among the last to get Into his stride, and he had no chance in the large field as Fairy Hill emerged victoriously, with Military second and Ptolemy third.
