THREE-YEAR-OLD PROSPECTS OF 1937 FORTY WINKS, chestnut colt, by Twink Alicia W.; property cf the Greentree Stable. He met with a training mishap last year and has not been rushed in training for his three-year-old engagements. IVjay not be ready for either the Derby or other big specials for his age. Bred to stay he may be formidable later on in the season. By NORRIS KOYDEN . . - . - , Through the nature of its conditions, the Saratoga Special has drawn fields of good two-year-olds year after year with its winner or some other starter quite frequently proving the champion of the season or as a three-year-old. Irish Lad, Sysonby, Colin, Sir Martin, Novelty, Roamer, Regret, Campfire, Sun Briar, Morvich, St. James, Chance Shot, Blue Larkspur, Whichone, Jamestown and Top Flight have been among the winners of the Special. Beaten contestants have included Broomstick, Sweep, Wildair, Prudery, Kai-Sang, Pompey, Jack High, Equipoise, Indian Runner, Ladysman, Peter Pan, Black Toney, Friar Rock, Hourless, Whiskaway, Bud Lerner, Osmand and Hadagal. Last years running of the event in which the winner took the entire purse wag Forty Winks, from the Greentree Stable of Mrs. Payne Whitney. The chestnut son of Twink and Alicia W., by Salmon-Trout, won the Special in a common gallop, stepping the six furlongs over a slow track in 1:134 to win by ten lengths over Flying Scout, with Galsun third and Swiftply fourth. Forty Winks was injured soon after and trainer William Brennan thought it advisable to put the colt away for the remainder of the season. He wintered at the Greentree training grounds near Red Bank, N. J., and is reported to be in splendid condition, far enough along in his preparation to be included among the possible starters for the Kentucky Derby. The juvenile star of Mrs. Whitneys stable made his debut late in June at Aqueduct fn which he defeated four other capable youngsters at five furlongs, which he ran in 1:005s, leading most of the way and winning by a length. A few days later over the same course, he dropped a length decision to Fencing, while finishing ahead of Tedious, Upper Berth and five others. The time was :59. Forty Winks did no racing during July, returning to activity in the United States Hotel Stakes at Saratoga, in which dash of six furlongs he made the early pace and only weakened in the stretch to finish third to Reaping Reward and Savage. Reaping Reward went on from that victory to defeat Pompoon in the New England Futurity and Privileged in the Kentucky Jockey Club Stakes. The following Saturday, Forty Winks made his runaway of the Special, in which he was at home over the slow track. He toyed with his opponents and increased his advantage over them steadily through the stretch. His performance was so much better than he displayed in the United States Hotel Stakes that it was suggested he might have been short for that engagement. The Greentree colt had no opportunity as a juvenile to indicate that he might go on, but there is much in his pedigree to suggest that he might. His sire, Twink, was by a son of- Sunstar and going into staying blood through his dam, Banniere. Alicia W., dam of Forty Winks, was by Salmon-Trout, representing Englands best speed line, but her dam was a daughter of Spearmint, which specialized in stamina. Forty Winks is a strong, robust colt that has not been burned out by too much campaigning as a two-year-old, and if he has outgrown the trouble he, suffered at Saratoga, he may go on to greater achievements. He at least has been considered the Greentree Stables best prospect all winter. Sundridge Amphion Sierra Doris..;.... Loved One .- I Lauretta f ,. f William the Third... St. Simcn lW.nk.pop .
