RIDERS DEVELOPAT AURORA Arcaro, Westrope, Keester and Others Gained Early Fame There. More Than Thirty Jockeys Signify Intention of Being on Hand for Opening Day, May 1. AURORA, III., April 21. When the nineteen-day Aurora meeting opens the six-month Illinois racing season on May 1 those followers of the thoroughbred who like to pick out a jockey to follow should be well satisfied with the list of riders on hand. With more stables campaigning more horses here for the spring meeting than ever before, there will be more members of the saddle profession on hand, as well. It is a matter of record that Aurora always serves to bring to national prominence some outstanding youngster every spring. A year ago it was Frank Chojnacki, who led the national standing for most of the season, only to wind up second to Basil James when the twelve-month returns were in. A year farther back and we find that Paul Keester first became a consistent winner at the Fox Valley track, and before him were Eddie Arcaro and Jack Westrope, among others. Over thirty riders already have signified, their intention of being on hand for the opening day of the season a week from Saturday. In addition to Jose Marrero and Henry Hauer, both of whom rank near the top of the years riding roster, there are such other successful ones due here as P. I Ryan, J. Richard, C. F. Simpson, J. Dyer, W. Cornay, C. Mojena and T. Meloche, all having brought in twenty-five or more winners so far this year. Other jockeys to ride during the Aurora meeting will be K. McCray, L. Turner, D. Barnett, F. Ward, R. Bohn, C. Hanauer, H. West, J. McCoy, R. demons, P. Crowhurst, G. Dobson, T. Dowell, D. Edwards, S.Erwin, F. Grill, R. Haber, W. Lang, J. Leyland, W. Lowe, C. Mills, T. P. Martin, B. Wimmer, H. Albrecht, A. Richard, G. OBryan and R. Mozer. Among the more highly touted of these are Ryan and young J. Richard. One horseman now at Aurora stated he would rather have Ryan riding for him than any lad in the business. Richard, who rode his first winner at Alamo Downs late last January, already has piloted over thirty winning horses. He rides for Mrs. A. M. Creech, who will have a strong representation at the Aurora track. The Illinois Racing Commission has announced that its list of officials for Chicago tracks will again be the same, with C. J. FitzGerald in the stewards stand, Oscar Bachman chief inspector of the mutuels. and Dr. George B. McKillip veterinarian representing the state.
