" ROMANCE OF THE TURF! History of the Thoroughbred and Racing Is Replete With Much Glamour, Romance and Tragedy One of the most glamorous and romantic stories is that of Sam Bryant winning the first running of the Futurity with Proctor Knott at Sheepshead Bay in 1888. Bryant was an elongated and eccentric Kentuckian, who first became interested in racing when he owned a grocery store near the entrance of Churchill Downs, Louisville, Ky. He had purchased Proctor Knott, a son of Luke Blackburn, from the Belle Meade Farm, near Nashville, for 00, became impressed with the gangling yearling, often proclaimed that he possessed a world beater and refused to sell at any price. How Proctor Knott made good for his devoted owner is the story of the colt scoring over the best of the West and going East to trim the stars of the elite. His victory in the Futurity, the first running of the greatest and mostvaluable of American two-year-old races, was a notable triumph over the mighty and immortal Salvator, one of the greatest of our turf heroes. When the "Blue, Gold Spots and Gold Sleeves," the popular colors of Sam Bryant flashed home the winner in that memorable race, another page of Romance was added to the history of the American turf. Bought for 00 and the only nomination of his owner for the rich Futurity, Proctor Knott won 0,400 in that one race. Need we go farther for Glamour and Romance? The Racing Colors which always have and always will play an important part in the greatest of outdoor sports are identified with much of the Glamour, Romance, yea, even Tragedy, when that grim spectre stalks among the glorious creatures of the equine world. The general public often has evinced a desire to become more familiar with these Racing Colors, and for that reason Daily Racing Form has attempted the gigantic task of gathering this valuable information, which will be found in the 1938 edition of American Racing Manual, and is obtainable nowhere else.
