TRIO OF EUGIBLES IN FINAL TRIALS FOR DERBY , • ■ • 4 Count Valiant, Xavier and My Feng Gallop One Mile at Aurora — t — Birthday, Gangplank and Gov. Chandler Safely Quartered at Fox Valley Track— Milky Ways Mountain Ridge and John One En Route AURORA, 111., May 25.— Three locally quartered candidates for the Illinois Derby had their final long workouts here this morning, several others received their last serious preps under actual racing conditions in the Waukegan Purse this afternoon, and a trio of invading hopefuls put in their appearance to stimulate further interest in Saturdays renewal of the 2,000 added stake which features the closing days program at the Fox Valley course. The three invading Derby horses to get in here this morning were the Greentree Stables Birthday and Gangplank, and Mrs. Kirby Ramseys Gov. Chandler, which rank among the principal contenders for Saturdays test of a mile and a furlong. They came from Churchill 8 Downs and stood the trip in excellent fashion, although they had to be unloaded in a driving rain. Leigh Cotton, chief assistant to trainer John M. Gaver, supervised the shipment of the two Greentree representatives, while trainer Kirby Ramsey will be here Friday to look after Gov. Chandler. MRS. MARS CANDIDATE. Expected before nightfall at Lincoln Fields were two other Illinois Derby horses, Mrs. Ethel V. Mars Mountain Ridge and John One. They also had been at Churchill Downs and are to be vanned here from the Crete track for their Derby engagement. At j Lincoln Fields, too, is the powerful Calumet Farm stable of Warren Wright, which has three Illinois Derby eligibles in Bull Lea, Taxes and Sickle T. L. Kelleys Count Valiant, the [Wesley Sears Farms Xavier and Frank Serembas My Feng. Each of them went a mile and each went in handy fashion. From a time standpoint, My Fengs performance was the most impressive, for he ran the eight furlongs on a good track in 1:43, the three-quarters in l:lf%. Xavier ran the mile in 1:45% and Count Valiant was timed in 1:45%. It was hoped that firm footing would prevail for Saturdays sport, but track conditions are not expected to make any great I difference in the size of the Derby field. It seemed likely today that ten or twelve would accept the issue.
