FILLY WINS IN FAST TIME North Riding Victress in the Hollis Claiming Stakes at Belmont. Defeats Fraidy Cat by Length in Running Six Furlongs Straight Course in 1:09% — Parmelee T. Finishes Third. NEW YORK, N. Y., May 25.— North Riding, turning in the best effort in three seasons of campaigning, tow-roped half a dozen rivals with her whirlwind speed in the six furlongs Hollis Stakes, the straightaway claiming event which was the principal monetary attraction at Belmont Park today. The four-year-old daughter of High Time and Scarborough, which performs under the green and orange banner of the Howe Stable, traveled down the Widener Course in the dazzling time of 1:09%, a scant fifth of a second off the record hung out by Balko eight years back, and one of the smartest races ever shown at the distance hereabouts. At the final pole she was just clear of Fraidy Cat, with the public choice, Parmelee T., another length away. The score marked her second straight at the meeting and was considerably more important than the previous one in an overnight handicap, adding ,750 to her earnings. ARCAROS DOUBLE. The success gave Eddie Arcaro a double, as he also had piloted General Howes to victory in the initial dash. Incidentally she was the third High Time horse to account for the Hollis, Quel Jeu and Miss Merriment being earlier winners for that stallion. Arcaro sent North Riding on the head end directly after the start and she drew into the clear in the first furlong to remain there for the balance of the trip. She was under hard pressure all the way to withstand repeated challenges from Fraidy Cat, finally shaking the Headley sprinter off in the last eighth of a mile. Fraidy Cat, turning in a vastly better effort than in his previous start, was right there all the way, proving decidedly best of the others. Parmalee T. left the post a trifle slowly but gained a forward position in the first quarter. Hard urged for the rest of the trip, he never was able to threaten the winner and right at the end he was hanging. Mythical King, winner of his previous start at Belmont, turned in a sharp race in the mile and a sixteenth Bowling Brook purse to earn a half length decision over Cravat, with Our Ketcham a head farther away. The Pharamond II. colt, which races for B. F. Whittaker, stepped the distance in 1:44 to register with a trifle to spare over | the swiftly closing runner-up. He was given extremely confident support, going to the post at 1 to 2 after opening at 4 to 5.
