BREEDERS STAKES THRILLER Mona Bell Survives Stretch Duel With Bunty Lawless. Race Heads Brilliant Closing Day Program at Woodbine Park 12,000 Fans in Attendance. TORONTO, Ont, Oct. 1. One of the greatest finishes in the long history of the Breeders Stakes came with the running of the twenty-ninth renewal of Woodbines stellar closing day program, when the Cosgrave stables Mona Bell, surviving a gruelling drive from the head of the stretch, was up in the final stride to out-nod William Morrisseys Bunty Lawless at the end of the mile and one-sixteenth journey. In third place, five lengths back, Mrs. S. Hoovers Skyros saved the third award before Harry Giddings Cabin Gal. Six faced the barrier for the event, which netted its winner ,435. Suffern and Tab Mark completed the field. Dispatched to a good start, the field left in perfect alignment, but in the short run to the first turn, Bunty Lawless assumed the pacemaking duties, saving ground on the inside. Mona Bell joined him in the run around the first turn and for the balance of the journey it was a close struggle between the pair. Suffern and Skyros made brief bids leaving the back stretch but dropped back quickly. The leaders were closely lapped as they straightened out for the run to the wire, and they matched stride for stride as they fought for the advantage. The twenty-fifth running of the Hendrie j Steeplechase Handicap proved costly to the H. R. Bain stable when Greatorex fell heavily at the final obstacle and broke his neck. Greatorex was a ten-year-old gray son of Stefan the Great Days Over and was running second to the eventual winner, York Miller, when the accident occurred. The jockey was thrown clear and escaped injury. York Miller won easily over Big March by ten lengths at the end of the three-mile test, with Wilfrid G. finishing another four I lengths back in third place. More than 12,000 were on hand for the close of the Ontario Jockey Clubs 1938 season. Ideal weather prevailed, while the track was at its best for the sport. , Sun Power, four-year-old son of Sunny Trace and Wistful, racing for H. R. Bain, accounted for the thirtieth running of the Ontario Jockey Club Cup Handicap, secondary feature on the final days program. Ridden by H. Lindberg and under the impost of 100 pounds, he drove to the finish of the mile and one-furlong, a length and one-half in advance of the Cosgrave Stables Bobs Boys. Third place went to G. H. Ellis Bomber, while Shoeless Joe was in fourth place before Parkwood Stables Donosiris.
