CUBS WIN THE PENNANT ST. LOUIS, Mo., Oct. 1. The Chicago Cubs today won the 1988 National League Pennant by winning the second game of a double-header with the St. Louis Cardinals after the latter had taken the first by a score of 4 to 3, while the Pittsburgh Pirates were beaten 9 to Gly Cincinnati. The opening game was a thriller, with the two teams tied at 3 to 3 in the seventh. Then Johnny Mize came to the bat In the eighth and hit a homerun to sink the hopes of the Cubs and defer the winning of the pennant to the nightcap, In which the veteran Charlie Root had the honor, and appropriately so, of pitching the Chi- cago team to victory. The score of the deciding game was 10 to 3.
