FIVE SANTA ANITA STEWARDS J. 0. McGill and James F. Gallagher Added to Arcadia Staff, t California Track to Introduce New System of Officiating Stewards Stand Loses One Floor. ARCADIA, Calif., Dec. 19. A board of five stewards -will preside at Santa Anita this season for the meeting opening on December 31, according to the announcement of officials by general manager Charles H. Strub of the Los Angeles Turf Club this morning. Christopher J. FitzGerald will resume his position as presiding steward and the associate stewards will be James F. Gallagher, W. A. Quigley, J. C. McGill and J. Kingsley Macomber, representing the California Horse Racing Board. It is an increase over the four who served last season. Ill-health of Roy Carruthers forced a vacancy and to fill the added position J. C. McGill and James F. Gallagher are to be given advancements. Santa Anita will introduce a ne.w system of officiating from positions around the race course. Five stewards stands have been erected by the inner rail one at each of the turns and another between the home stretch and the far turn. The stewards will occupy these stands so as to have closer and more advantageous inspection of the running of the races. NOVEL PROCEDURE. The entire board of stewards will meet at the finish line at the conclusion of each race. The top story of the old judges stand has been taken off and the glass-ericlos.ed lower floor will serve to weigh out the jockeys and also as a meeting place for the stewards. The new arrangement will bring these proceedings within full view of the spectators and it will greatly improve the view of the finish line from all parts of the stands and terraces. The placing judges will be at their old posts in front of the judges stand. Racing secretary and handicapper Webb A. Everett has again been named as presiding placing -judge and will have as associates, C. J. FitzGerald, Jr., and J. R. Malu-vius, who is to be assistant racing secretary. Other officials will be Edward Thomas, starter; C. J. FitzGerald, clerk of the scales; Berry Whitehead, assistant clerk of the scales; James F. Gallagher and J. C. McGill, paddock stewards; H. C. McKim, D. V. M., track veterinarian representing the California Horse Racing Board; Dr. Isaac N. Ken-j dall and Dr. C, F. Murphy, track physicians; j Mort Shaw, manager of mutuels; Herman Rod, track superintendent.
