EIGHTEEN IN HEADLINER Christmas Handicap at Fair Grounds Attracts Crack Field. Performance of Michigan Flyer Against Older Opponets Holds Attention of Turf Enthusiasts. NEW ORLEANS, La., .Dec. 24. The strongest field of thoroughbreds since the presentation of the Thanksgiving Handicap on the first day of the meeting is scheduled to parade postward in the twentieth running of the Christmas Handicap at the Fair Grounds Monday afternoon. The Christmas Special, to be decided oyer a mile and a teenth for a ,000 added purse, annually is one of the highlights of the Louisiana Jockey Clubs season, and the race may have one of its most brilliant renewals in many years on Monday. The race drew a field of eighteen and regardless of track conditions, which today threatened to be off, twelve or fifteen are likely to be actual starters. Much interest in the Christmas Handicap will attach to the efforts of D. A. Woods Busy K. to flash the form which ranked him among the foremost handicap horses in the East during the current year. The performance of Joe W. Browns two-year-old Michigan Flyer against older competition; the quest of Mrs. C. C. Winters Catomar and W. W. Adams Warlaine for their second stake victories of the meeting, and a comparison of the running qualities of such improved platers as O. L. Fosters Casinghead and Arthur Gaignard, Jr.s Cash o Boy with those of their more fashionable rivals. BEST IN THE MUD. Busy K., which has been honored with top weight of 118 pounds, has raced with more than ordinary success with some of the best handicap horses in the country, among them War Admiral and Seabiscuit, but he was a keen disappointment in his first outing here. If the track is muddy Monday it is generally agreed that he will be much tougher to beat and may be so even if the racing strip is" fast. Michigan Flyer went unplaced in the Pass Christian Handicap, due possibly to poor ! Continued on twenty-seventh page. His bid against older horses will be watched with keen interest and it is probable that his effort on Monday will determine whether he is a colt of Louisiana Derby timber. Catomar and Warlaine already have distinguished themselves as runners of real quality by the manner in which they captured the Thanksgiving and Jefferson Park Handicaps, respectively, and they are certain to have large followings in the Christmas Handicap. But these are not the only accomplished thoroughbreds in Mondays field, for also among the entries are such as James Emerys Taken, Mrs. Sam Orrs Orinoco, Mrs. A. Mi Creechs Shining Heels and Gato, Hazel M. Babylons Brown Knight and R. A. CowardsWaxwing, all of which have shown at one time or another since the meeting opened that they can hold their own in any company here. GATO, IN WITH 114. Next to Busy K. in the weight assignments is Gato, with 114 pounds, while his running mate, Shining Heelsr is rated only a pound less. Orinoco and Taken will be asked to shoulder 110 pounds and from there the imposts scale down to ninety, the package given each to Michigan Flyer and Jubilee C, another two-year-old owned by Harold Nellor. Mrs. E. H. Bartletts Zevson won the Christmas Handicap the last two years and it is unfortunate that he cannot be sent after the prize for the third straight year. He injured himself in picking up a nail some time ago and his trainer, Joe Baumbach, has not been able to get him ready for such a strenuous test as the Christmas Handicap. The son of Zev, however, will be seen under colors in the six furlongs Laurel Purse, the, secondary attraction, in which he will meet such able sprinters as Time Signal, Grey Streak, Adolfj Fairflax, Old Rosebush and Real Play. The other races on the holiday card also have their appeal and should do much to make the days sport a complete success. A splendid field has been named for the Christmas Handicap, mile and a sixteenth feature of Mondays program at the Fair Grounds, and racing devotees are looking : forward to one of its most interesting re- : newals.
