THREE-YEAR-OLD PROSPECTS OF 1939 YALE O NINE By NOKRIS HOYDEN 1 4 Yale o Nine may not have as much right to be included in this series as some-of the prospects left out, but upon several occasions last season the gelded son of Peter Hastings and Nursie, by Wrack, owned by Thomas D. Taggart, of French Lick Springs fame gave indications of developing into a good contender for three-year-old honors. He was shipped to California last winter to try for the Santa Anita Derby, but his efforts in that race and in his other start at the Arcadia course detracted from his reputation. Yale o Nine wasnt himself, however. As a juvenile, Yale o Nine went postward fourteen times and scored a half dozen victories, including the Joliet Stakes at Lincoln Fields. He was second in the Old Colony Stakes at Narragansett Park, third in the Hyde Park at Arlington Park, fourth in the Richard Johnson at Laurel and dead-heated for the same position in the Eastern Shore Handicap. .Beginning nis career at iveeneiana last jpru, ue wcu uujioucu w tu oun uui, won easily at the next asking in a claiming race at Churchill Downs, repeating at the same course over a field including Steel Heels and Viscounty. Yale o" Nine then accounted for his two outings at Lincoln Fields, the second being in the Joliet, for which the track was heavy. He wore down Beau James in the stretch to triumph by a head in the five-furlong dash. Catching a muddy track in his first race at Arlington, the Taggart youngster again demonstrated his fondness for soft going by winning by four lengths over a field including the fleet Lightspur. In the Hyde Park, for which the track was fast, he closed gamely to take third place three and a half lengths back of Beau James as Allegro was second, after which he was given a vacation. At Narragansett, Yale o Nine went postward three times, finishing third to Hants and Sidney Carton, and then second again to the former, making up ground in both instances. He did the same in the Old Colony, just failing by a length of overtaking Heather Time as Hants was third and Sweet Nancy fourth. One of his best efforts was in the Eastern Shore, in which he was almost hopelessly out of contention in the early stages, but he made up more than five lengths in the stretch to be beaten less han two lengths by Time Alone as Sweet Nancy was second and T. M. Dorsett third. Yale o Nine backed up his performance in the Eastern Shore by taking his -next outing at Havre de Grace a full second faster than the handicaps time, winning by four lengths over Good Odds, with Soldierette third and Sun Plume fourth. He lacked the speed to make trouble in the Richard Johnson, but again showed willingness in the stretch run as Johnstown, Impound and Time Alone beat him to the wire. That was his last effort as a juvenile. Becoming ill during his trip from Kentucky to California, Yale o Nine never came around to himself, although a chance was taken and he started in the San Vicente Handicap and Santa Anita Derby. The Taggart three-year-old has resumed racing in better fettle than during the winter and his connections are hopeful he can live up to the promise indicated by his juvenile campaign. Out of a stout, old family and by Peter Hastings, the sire of Mata Hari, Yale o Nine appears better adapted for route racing than for sprinting, and if his development has not been retarded nor already reached its peak, he may prove one of the better three-year-olds.
