Kentucky Derbys of Past-Charts and Future Books 1920 -----------------------"------------------------------- The season of 1920 was Man o Wars three-year-old year, but Samuel D. Riddle, his owner, indicated early in the new year that his colt would not be among the starters in the Kentucky Derby. Damask, owned by Harry Payne Whitney, therefore opened as future book choice at 4 to 1, exceptionally short odds in view of the fact that Upset, the only horse that ever defeated Man o War, was among the eligibles. Upset was 50 to 1, On Watch, owned by George W. Loft, being second choice to Damask. On Watch was offered at 6 to 1, Donnacona, another Loft entry, was held at 10 to 1 along with Ral Parrs Blazes. The brilliant filly, Cleopatra, could be backed in the future books that year at 200 to 1. Wildair, another Whitney horse, was 30 to 1. The result of the race was a distinctive Eastern triumph, the first six horses at the finish being owned by turfmen from the Atlantic seaboard states. The unexpected happened when Ral Parrs Paul Jones, at the substantial odds of 4.40 for , outlasted H. P. Whitneys Upset by a head, Ted Rice riding a brilliant finish on the winner. G. W. Lofts On Watch was third and Damask fourth, as the following chart of the race reveals: FIFTH RACE 1 1-4 MILES. Old Rosebud, May 9, 1914 2:03 3 114. PAUL JONES was away fast, raced into the lead at once and, holding on in game style, outstayed UPSET in the final drive. The latter moved up menacingly after going a half mile and, saving ground when coming into the stretch, appeared the winner a sixteenth out, but tired ristht at the end. ON WATCH came from far back in the last half and finished well. DAMASK raced forwardly, but tired in the stretch. BY GOLLY quit. DONNACONA had no mishaps. PEACE PENNANT was always far back.
