Pig Tails, a three-year-old daughter of Hollyrood and Mammys Girl, exerted her superiority over six other rivals, most of them older horses the Grand Crossing Handicap, as the 30-day spring meeting -of the Lincoln Fields Jockey Club got off to a splendid start this afternoon. Before a large and enthusiastic Monday crowd, Pig Tails, flying the colors Herbert M. Toolf s Woolford Farm, ran the six furlongs of todays engagement in 1:14 on a good track and scored in handy fashion, and her older stablemate, the six-year-old Technician, finished fourth. Second honorc went to Mrs. G. H. Emicks Book Plate, while Polymelior, representing Jean Putnam, was third. Freshfrom a smart triumph at Churchill Downs, where she won her last engagement from a field of horses of her own. age and sex, the Hollyrood filly quickly sprinted to the front and stayed there. She enjoyed an advantage of three lengths as she reached the stretch turn and still had it a furlong from the wire. From there on she just coasted to protect her lead, which at the end was a length and a half. p First of All Suffers Interference Pig Tails, handled by L. Haskell and s shouldering 103 pounds, was the favorite along with her running companion at odds of 11 to 10. Book Plate, who was among the leaders from the beginning, closed with resolution ii in the drive and, in taking the place, beat Polymelior a neck. Technician was another I length and a half back. First of All, the only other three-year-old 0 in the race, was in a prominent position when Equistar was forced over on him and, after this misfortune, the Dixi- ana gelding had little or no chance. He was forced back and never recovered. Equistar j remained a sharp factor to the j. last eighth and then he gave way, just-being t beaten narrowly for fourth money fc by Technician. Pumpgun, who was never i prominent, was the only other starter. By her victory, Pig Tails qualified handsomely s for her engagement in next Saturdays c ,000 added Crete Handicap, which s also will be contested at six furlongs. All of those who trailed her past the judges today also are eligible for this week-ends feature. The success of todays opening was most e encouraging to Col. Matt J. Winn and his s associates in the Lincoln Fields Jockey C Club. The size of the attendance far surpassed i expectations, what with limited t transportation facilities, and it seemed to Continued on Page Thirty-Five Pig Tails Takes Feature Event at Lincoln Fields Woolford Filly Beats Book Plate And Polymelior in Easy Fashion Continued from Page One forebode the further success of the meeting. The sport was interesting throughout the card and well supported horses for the most part gave creditable accounts of themselves. The program opened with a popular victory for Mrs. E. B. Carpenters Anopheles, who led home nine other sprinters at six furlongs. Never far away while Anna-a-Vish made the pace. Anopheles responded when shaken up in the home stretch and, getting to the front just inside the final eighth, drew clear to win with ease. Black Highbrow came from far back to account for second money, as David B. Jr., was third. Anna-a-Vish wound up fourth. The second and third events making up the Daily Double combination, went to Clyde Troutts Owasse, and Mrs. G. H. Emicks King Cotton. Both races were contested at six furlongs. Owasse stood a sharp drive at the hands of Lester Balaski to win by a half length from Distant Isle, while King Cotton was lucky enough to find racing room on the inside for his sprint to victory. Highscope was second to King Cotton and Donna-gina third. The fourth race also decided at three-quarters of a mile, saw Mrs. S. Smiths Hasty Star lead from one end to the other. Merry Bid was closest to the winner to the final eighth and there Alley moved up to take second honors. Merry Bid was easily best of the others in the field of seven.
