Narragansett Racing Gives 8,227 To War Chest, Charitable Agencies Army Relief Benefits by i 9,372 and Navy Fund By 6,1 38 Through Sport PAWTUCKET, R. I., May 18. The Army Relief Fund received a total of 9,372.51 and the Navy Relief. Fund 6,138.52 as their share of the proceeds of special War Chest races staged during Nrragansett Parks 25-day spring meeting, figures released by president James E. Dooley reveal. Ah additional ,996.38 will be divided between the. Red Cross and the United Service Organizations. The total contribution to the Navy Relief includes a special 00 donation made to various Navy Relief benefits by Narragansett Park. A breakdown of the complete figures for the 25-day meeting shows that the racing at Narragansett Park contributed a total of 8,227;41 to war relief agencies and local charities, including a donation of 50 to the East Providence Community Fund not previously announced. This means that the average daily yield to the war chest and local charities at the spring meeting was ,329.09. , Actual cash donations made by Narragansett Park to the War Chest and local charities totalled 3,280.74, an average of ,331.23 for every day the track operated. This amount, contributed directly by the racing association itself, was made up of the following donations: Army Relief, ,073.87; Navy Relief, ,206.87; purses and expenses of additional races, ,250; local charities, 5,750. The latter amount was comprised of an ,000 contribution to the United Community Fund, a ,000 contribution to the Catholic Charity Appeal and the contribution to the East Providence Community Fund. Narragansett held extra races on all five Saturdays of its meeting, with, the proceeds from the betting and breakage on these events going to the War Chest Fund. On opening day, April 11, entire proceeds of the extra race, ,206.87, went to the Navy Relief Fund, and an additional ,206.87 was contributed by the track. On the final day of the meeting, May 9, entire proceeds of the extra race, ,073.87, went to the Army Relief Fund, and an additional ,073.87 was contributed by the track. Extra races on the three intervening Saturdays realized a total of 7,415.93. Of this, sixty per cent, or 0,449.56, was divided between the Army and Navy Relief Funds. Forty per cent, or ,966.37, was divided between the Red Cross and the USO. Even greater contributions for the War Chest and local charities are expected from Narragansett Parks summer and fall meeting, which runs through forty-two days, from August 10 through September 26.
