Announce Association Officials at Longacres Three War Benefit Days Will Be Staged at Seattle Course SEATTLE, Wash., May 18 Association officials for the Washington Jockey Clubs tenth summer season of racing at Long-acres were announced here today by president Joseph Gottstein. John Maluvius, recently of Phoenix and formerly of Tanforan and Del Mar, was named racing secretary for the meeting, which opens for a 50-day run on June 27. Maluvius takes over a post left vacant by the death of M. H. Morrison, the scholarly Oklahoman. His return to Longacres will be something in the nature of a homecoming, since it was at the Washington Jockey Clubs plant that he first ascended to key positions in western officialdom. He served as right-bower to Webb Everett, at Longacres until the latter moved to Santa Anita in 1935-36, and has been with the Santa Anita handicapped ever since. Maluvius served one season at Longacres as racing secretary 1938. Named as association stewards for Long-acres were R. E. "Lanny" Leighninger, who also will direct public relations for the track, and Russell Sanders. A third steward, to be named by the Washington Horse Racing Commission, will be the presiding steward for the session. Presiding steward at Longacres last season was judge James Gallagher, who was hurriedly called to the post when veteran Al Hardy became seriously ill. Hardy recovered from his ailments in mid-summer and served in the stand at Spokanes Playfair track with Gallagher. Back again as starter will be Fred Can-trail, one-time race rider. Also returning will be the Kentuckian Ernest M. White, who will lead the pari-mutuel department. White kept the machines clicking at Keene-land and is now completing duties in the mutuel room at Churchill Downs. Another former jockey, Eddie Hayes, was named qustodian of the jockeys room, a post he held at Longacres during the meet-, ings of 1933-34-35. Hayes, like Everett, Maluvius and several other western turf notables, moved from the Renton oval to Santa Anita and has been connected with the now-blacked-out plant ever since. The above officials were named following a meeting of the Washington Jockey Clubs executive committee, consisting of Gottstein, Frank Reed, prominent Northwest lumberman, and Charles F. Clise, Seattle financier. The executive, committee also discussed preliminary arrangements for the staging of the three "all-out" charity days scheduled at Longacres this summer one each for the Red Cross, Army Relief and Navy Relief. On these occasions the entire gate receipts and associations share of the pari-mutuel handle, plus gross concession receipts, are to be turned over to the designated charity. Last year, on- the highly successful Red Cross Day and British War Relief Day, all purses were donated by prominent Seattle businessmen and local organizations. All employes of the Washington Jockey Club, and the concessionaire, R. Harold Ostrow, work without salary on. charity days. And last season the employes of the racing commission stewards, patrol judges, secretaries, etc. all donated their pay checks for the special occasion.
