Thirty-one three-year-olds and older horses are included in the list of horses from which the field for the ,000 added Crete Handicap will be drawn Saturday at Lincoln Fields. The race is the first of five stakes to be staged during the spring season here and it promises to be a contest worth watching. Standing out prominently in the list of eligiblej for the six-furlong feature this week-end is Brcwnell Combs Miss Dogwood, recent winner of the Kentucky Oaks. This three-year-old daughter of Bull Dog and Myrtlewood won her only two engagements of this year and she promises to be. a dangerous force in the decision of the many features on the Lincoln Fields program. Last year Miss Dogwood also raced with distinction. She finished second to Alsab in the Prairie State Stakes, won the Special Event at Keeneland from a field that included Petrify and was second to. Devil Diver in the Breeders Futurity, also at Keeneland. Will Be Meeting Older Horses Thus far this spring Miss Dogwood has been confined to racing against horses of her own age, but if she accepts the issue this week-end she must tackle older rivals. A few of those who may bo arrayed against the Combs filly are Liberty Flight, Smacked, Bulldinger, Polymelior, Crossbow H., Equistar, Signator, Technician, Pump-gun, Step By, Gold Bubble, Three Percent and Shut Eye. Crossbow II. and Equistar are veterans of previous runnings of the Crete Handicap. Crossbow H. won the race in 1938 when he was a five-year-old, and Equistar finished second to Potranco in last years renewal of the stake. Many turf stars are listed among former winners of the Crete. Some of them besides Crossbow n. are Supremus, Blackwood, Misstep, Pansy Walker, Marica and Dolly Val. The Crete Handicap will top an especially attractive card this week-end, for it also will include the Drake Hotel Handicap, in which three-year-olds and older horses are to compete at a mile and a sixteenth. This event will bring out many horses that later will be seen under colors in such " Lincoln Fields distance features as the Francis S. Peabody Memorial Handicap, i the La Salle Handicap and the Lincoln Handicap. Saturdays card also will include the Woodlawn Purse, designed for two-year-olds destined to see action in the Joliet Stakes, a ,000 fixture for juveniles scheduled for June 6.
