Shasta Man Repeats at Suffolk Downs Moves Up in Class To Whip Misf lying Latter Almost Two Lengths Off Patterson Campaigner Double for W. E. Charles, Jr. BOSTON, Mass., May 18. Shasta Man, a three-year-old colt with mud-running ability, kept his Suffolk Downs record intact by repeating a recent victory while soundly defeating five other mediocre plat- ers in the fifth race of the jfeatureless program this afternoon. The winner and S. W. Shapoffs Misfly-ing, who finished second, dominated the running of the mile event, which found the latter a length and three-quarters back. as the field reached the wire. M. Weiners Playfields finished third, fifteen lengths away. The Patterson colt, quickest to begin, was taken under light restraint by Jockey A. DeLara after rounding the first turn and entered the back stretch with a clear advantage over Mad Crusader. Nearing the far turn Playfields was called on for her challenge and moved fast on the outside but was found wanting. It was at this point that Misflying began reducing the leaders margin. Entering the stretch, jockey Danny Johnston moved on the outside, then took the daughter of Canaan inside only to have the Shapoffcolorbearer flounder in the deep going. A claim of foul was lodged against the winner, but it was not allowed. The sloppy condition of the track caused the program to be depleted by scratches. Very Graceful Wins at Long Odds The largest mutuel pay-off of the current New England season appeared in the fourth race when Miss A. O. Baldeneckers-Very Graceful scored a two-length victory to return her backers 65.20 for "teach wagered. The Discovery filly remained close to the pace in the run down the back stretch, went very wide on the turn, but straightened out entering the stretch to respond to strong handling and then disposed of Opportunity to draw off at the end. Vingt et Un, showing a liking for the going, accounted for the opening event. The roan gelded son of High Quest broke alertly and was well handled by jockey Warren E. Snyder when outrun to the turn, then moved into the lead entering the stretch, to draw clear. He was hustled to the end, .to maintain almost a length advantage. Col. Goodnight, the favorite in the race was well up throughout, to close with determination through the stretch, to nip R. W. Hullcoats Una ,H. for the place. ell-Earned Victory Mrs. Edward Haughtons Latepass scored a well-earned victory in the second race of the afternoon by outfinishing Coldstreams Brown Dancer in the final strides. J. F. Buckleys Dark Level closed fast on k the outside to earn the minor award, three lengths back of the top pair. The winner in the thick of contention from the start, while on the extreme outside, was sent up fast rounding the far turn, to assume command, fighting it out stubbornly with the pacemaker, Brown Dancer, to gain a nose decision at the finish. Scarcity scored a front-running victory to account for the third race, finishing two lengths in the van of Valdina Flare, with S. Garfields Love Note charging fast in the stretch to earn the show award. The daughter of Good Advice had on her running shoes today to open a clear advantage, while setting her own pace. Valdina Flare was forced to slip through on the inside to gain a contending position after being outrun to the turn and then responded to pressure in the final furlong. The winner was ridden by jockey Charlie Durando, making it a double for trainer W. E. Charles, Jr., who had sent out Vingt et TJn in the first race.
