Clarksville Nose Victor In Highland Handicap Outgames Favored Maxiekin in Thrilling Finish at Fairmount COLLINS VILLE, 111., June 19.— Clarksville, who had finished second in two of the previous three Fairmount Park Saturday features, finally found the winners circle, but he only lasted to have a nose decision over Sol Rouchers Maxiekin, who had been successful in the previous two half-holiday headliners. J. A. Blackwells Miss Ethel was third at the end of the six furlongs, one and one-half lengths back of Maxiekin and two lengths before Franks Boy, pacemaker for more than five of the six panels. Flaunting the blue and brown of John Greener, Tennessee breeder and sporsman, and completing a double for trainer William Hinphy, who sent J. Lee Greenock out to win the third contest, Clarksville, under 108 pounds, ran the distance in 1:13, the fastest time of the meeting. This was the Highland Handicap, and eight accepted, with Leslie Jarvis the first in motion. However, he was unable to outpace Franks J3oy, Miss Ethel and Gold Mike, and after offering a bold bid midway of the stretch, he tired. With the veteran Joe Dyer aboard, Clarksville was the slowest to begin. He improved his position on the inside, but was forced to go around Franks Boy and Miss Ethel soon after entering the stretch. Clarksville was in the van a sixteenth out, but he tired in the late stages, and Maxiekin again made made her belated charge, which proved to be so strong that a picture was needed for the judges. Maxftkin, under the top weight of 114 pounds, was the favorite, and the winner was a strong second choice. Bashful Duck was sent to the outside after going three-sixteenths and lost much ground thereafter. Forced to lose ground from the start, Seeley Killpatricks Jim Pat eke out a nose victory over Humes and Sparrows Doubtful in the Florissant Purse that served as the secondary attraction. This run of one mile and 70 yards found I Lov Bridge third and Meetsum fourth. Sun Pharos was the favorite and, after trailing the field to the stretch, he was blocked when Hard Lu, who had led the field into the stretch, stopped in front of him. It was Jim Pats first victory of the year and he was the outsider in the wagering. A ticket returned 1.60. With both Winning Chance and Zackie, winners of the first and second races, neglected in the wagering, the Daily Double was worth 84,60 to holders of winning tickets. J. Lee Greenock sprung another surprise by winning the third number and Eva Webre, also an outsider, came from well back to win the fourth contest.
