Smart Lookin Wins Betsy Ross by Neck Defeats Sea Reign ► To Stay Unbeaten I Allen T. Simmons Daughter Of Reaping Reward Gets Up In Final Strides at Suffolk BOSTON, Mass., June 19.— In one of the most stirring finishes that have marked the | running of the Betsy Ross Stakes, Smart . Lookin, from the Allen T. Simmons string. | stuck it out gamely to defeat Lazy F i Ranchs Sea Reigh by a short neck, with i Vietta, racing for George D. Widener, third, . after having carried most of the pace. Evelyn Rolls was fourth, while the entry of Sanoj and In Vogue were fifth and last respectively. The winner was timed in :59y,. The company was reduced to a half dozen when Sickle Sun, after moving into the stall gate, began acting fractiously, unseated her rider and in the melee suffered a cut stifle. The Sickle miss was ordered scratched and all wagers were refunded. Smart Lookin was making the third start of her career, all of which were over the local oval, each time being returned triumphant. Her stakes triumph today, which netted her ,450, the winners portion of the ,500 added prize, was her most important victory, having raced under a claiming tag of ,000 in her first appearance under silks. W. B. Miller, breeder of the filly, received an award of 00. Tommy Luther had the mount on the Reaping Reward filly and had her in front at the start. However, it required only a few strides before Vietta was in command with In Vogue pressing her closely. The favored Sea Reigh was slow to settle into stride and showed only before Sanoj, who was making her first start. Moves Into Second Place Around the turn Vietta shook off In Vogue and drew into a clear lead. Smart Lookin was under slight reserve and soon raced into second place. Sea Reigh had begun to give improved speed and Lynch chose a course along the inner rail. A furlong from home it was still the Widener miss by a length, while the Simmons filly was racing past Sea Reigh. Nearing the close Vietta began to falter and the Reaping Reward filly forged to the front. Sea Reigh was going gamely on the inside and cutting down the gap that separated her from the leader at every stride. Luther went to a drive, with Smart Lookin responding gamely to still have her neck in front as they sped over the line. The Lazy F Ranch filly was a half length in advance of Vietta, with the latter having little difficulty in saving the show award. The week-end sport attracted a crowd of 17,561. Apprentice T. Coucci treated himself to a double when he followed up his triumph astride Morstep by taking the fifth race with War Result. The Bull Dog five-year-old ran down Charitable and Twinkippy in the stretch to win going away. Charitable shook off Twinkippy to gain the place prize. Twinkippy had little trouble taking the show position a length before Hicomb.
