, Mother Graduates In Betsy Ross Win Prevails Over Sugar Pill By Half Length at Suffolk; Heres Me Tiring Third SUFFOLK DOWNS, East Boston, Mass., June 22. Improving all the time in her four previous starts and finding running room as the leaders went wide, C. V. Whitneys gray filly, Mother, graduated from the maiden ranks by winning the Betsy Ross Stakes, 0,000 added, for two-year-old fillies, before 25,037 enthusiasts at Suffolk Downs today. The gray daughter of Mahmoud, out of Fuss Budget, was two seconds off the track record of 1:04 as she took down the 1,000 winners share of the stake, but she still was fast enough to score a half-length victory over the favorite, with Circle M Ranchs Sugar Pill second and the pacemaker, Fred Wyses Heres Me, third. Runner-Up Loses Ground If there were any mishaps they happened to Sugar Pill, this Stimulus filly losing much ground on the stretch turn. However, there was no question about the stretch drive, when the first three fillies came down together, and it was here that Mother had the more drive. As the field of seven started on this dash of five and one-half furlongs the first out of the gate was Fair Cross, followed by A. Richers Fleet West, with Heres Me moving up on the rail. Heres Me took over the pace, with Fair Cross second and Fleet West still third, and Sugar Pill began to charge on the outside from the three-eighths pole. Miller, in the meantime, had his mount going steadily on the rail. Turning for home Heres Me drifted slightly, carrying Fair Cross, the tiring Fleet West and the charging Sugar Pill with her. In the meantime Mother slipped through a wide opening and as the field straightened out Heres Me still held the lead, but only a slight one, with Mother and Sugar Pill making their bids. Heres Me rallied once but Mother drew away to win by the aforesaid half length, with Sugar Pill taking the place by a head.
