Mrs. Elizabeth N. Grahams Maine Chance Farm, which has suffered any number of setbacks this season, was dealt an exceedingly crushing blow during the runnings of the 0,000 Hyde Park Stakes and the 5,000 Princess Doreen Stakes here this afternoon. In the twin features, which was witnessed by a crowd of 27,750, here eJt Pilot, who appeared to have claim on the two-year-old championship, went down to a crushing defeat in the Hyde Park, while the Princess Doreen found her queenly Beaugay failing in her comeback to the turf after winning distinction of acclaim as the best two-year-old to race last season. Two rank outsiders, Claude C. Tanners Colonel OF and Christiana Stables Sea Snack, were the shocking winners of the headliners. Colonel OF turned in a snappy performance to score a notable victory in the Hyde Park by finishing well clear of W. Veenemans Tweets Boy, with W. G. Helis Cosmic Bomb taking the show. In the Princess Doreen, Sea Snack drove to a thrilling victory over Beaugay, while Allen and Estrins Roman Belle took the show money. Colonel OF., picked up 119 pounds and stepped over the five and one half furlongs on the good track in 1:06. Although he had previously won the Lay-fayette Stakes at Keeneland, although beaten subsequently by Preoccupy in the Joliet Stakes at Lincoln Fields at Haw- thorne. He was first out of the starting gate, but was soon joined by Tweets Boy and this pair dominated the early running. Preoccupy failed to break with his usual alertness and dropped out of contention almost immediately, while Education flashed enough speed to be among the first three on the turn and in a contending position. Colonel OF, in the meantime, was not too far out of it, but Steve Brooks had not decided yet to make a run at the top ones. As they arrived at the head of the stretch, Jet Pilot began to display signs of distress and this allowed Tweets Boy to open a clear advantage, but a black streak emerged from the pack and soon joined him. The Colonel forged into a slight advantage nearing the eighth pole, neatly put away Tweets Boy in a short brush, then drew away. Cosmic Bomb, who was well up most of the way, made a hard bid during the late stages but was unable to close in on the leaders. Jet Pilot wound up fifth and Education seventh, and Preoccupy ninth. The Princess Doreen was a lively struggle from the word go. With no less than 15 horses competing over the six furlongs, an auxiliary stall starting gate was brought into play to send the field away. Starter Roy Dickerson caught the field on its toes and they all dashed out as a team After the field settled into stride in the shuffle for position, it was Beaugay whc Continued on Page Thirty
