Flash Burn Carries Off Diamond State Honors King Ranch Colt Whips Mahout-Christiana Stakes to Mityme DELAWARE PARK, Stanton, Del., June 22. King Ranchs Flash Burn, a consistent son of Brazado Incandescent and a work mate for the Triple Crown winner, Assault, earlier in the season, garnered some glory for himself here this afternoon when he drove to a convincing length and a half triumph in the eighth running of the 2,500 Diamond State Stakes, outstanding race of the meeting for three-year-olds. Coming up to the race with four victories and three seconds during his seven race campaign this season, the Robert J. Kleberg colorbearer, under Warren Mehrtens, left little doubt as to his supremacy as he stepped the mile and a furlong in 1:54, highly commendable time over the track termed as slow. His margin of victory over Mrs. M. Jeffords favored Mahout gradually dwindling, but that took no lustre from his effort. Mahout held a similar margin over Cedar Farms faltering Lovemenow. Flash Burn was away alertly but Mehrtens elected to follow the early pace, while Lovat and Lovemenow raced each other into defeat. The former was the first to weaken, and Lovemenow assumed the lead. He was never able to draw clear, however, and forced Flash Burn to rally with him, displacing Cedar Farms stalwart in the early stretch and attaining a commanding advantage inside the furlong pole. Mahout, too, found his racing legs and was commencing a threatening surge. Flash Burn proved equal to the occasion, however, and continued on to the victory and a purse of 4,570, more than half again what he had earned up to today. Flash Burn was third choice among the crowd of approximately 22,500, and paid 1.10.
