BELMONT PARK, Elmont, L. I., N. Y., May 6. — Walter P. Chryslers Caltha was under the wire first at the end of the forty-ninth running of the 0,000 Fashion Stakes at Belmont Park today, leading Mrs. Moody Jolleys Picnic Lunch by a head, with Wheatley Stables Grey Flight another head away at the end of the four and a half furlongs, but the winner had to survive a foul claim lodged by Basil James, who rode Picnic Lunch. After viewing the movies, the result was allowed to stand. It appeared from the stands that Grey Flight bore out, causing Picnic Lunch to be caught in a jam between her and Caltha, who was racing straight and true on the outside. James snatched up with Picnic Lunch, then came on again and undoubtedly would have won in another stride. Jack Westrope rode Caltha. Caltha was somewhat neglected by the majority of the crowd of 23,883 who turned out in pleasant weather, and paid 3.40 after running the four and one-half furlongs down the straightaway in :53y5 over a dead track. The daughter of Bahram — Marsh Marigold, by Sir Gallahad III., added 1,475 to previous earnings of ,525 and was scoring her third victory in seven starts. Whats New Gives Way Whats New appeared to be first out of the gate at the head of the Widener course, but was quickly passed by Picnic Lunch, Caltha and Grey Flight. Loriot and Peace of Mind were racing as a pair back of this group, followed by Ghost Run, Tin-talate and Whats New, who stopped as fast as she started when the field really came into view. As the field passed the clubhouse, Grey Flight bore out from the inside and came toward Picnic Lunch, while Caltha was still farther out. As Grey Flight began to ride Picnic Lunch closely, James took back and the other pair continued their head and head duel to the wire. Once clear, Picnic Lunch came on again with a powerful rush and was certainly the best in the race, but if any foul was actually committed, it probably was done by the filly who finished third and not by the winner. John J. Watts Harmonica, carrying the feather of 104 pounds , and little Joe Snel-ler, scored an easy victory over B. F. The final margin was two and a half lengths, with Snel-ler sitting still and Ronnie Nash driving his utmost to take the place by a head from Glen Riddles Farms Merry Lass. Mrs. Whitney Stones By Sea finished another length and a half out of the money. Harmonica paid a liberal .90 and ran the six furlongs in 1:12% over a track that had become good. Sneller, who had won the opener on Blonde Magic, hustled Harmonica to the front at the start of the Wistful, while Keynote went right with her for a little more than a quarter-mile. Meanwhile, Carolyn A. was tucked in along the inside rail and apparently unable to untrack herself in the comparatively deep going. Nearing the stretch turn, Harmonica widened her lead to three lengths over By Sea, who made a brief bid as Keynote tired, while Carolyn A. surged up on the inside of Merry Lass, saving ground, but not gaining much on the leader. As Harmonica coasted home, Carolyn A. fought on gamely and outfinished Merry Lass, while By Sea tired badly. Greentree Stables Bimlette, who was making her first start of the year, ran a dull race, showing no speed at any stage.
