Four More Preakness Hopes Come to Pimlico Faultless, Riskolater, Double Jay, On Trust Latest Arrivals PIMLICO, Baltimore, Md., May 6.— Interest in Saturdays fifty-seventh Preakness running continued to mount steadily here today as three more highly-regarded three-year-olds arrived from Louisville before noon, and another was expected via air later in the day to join those already on the scene of the 00,000 classic. Unloading in fine condition shortly before noon at the nearby Mount Washington Station were Calumet Farms Faultless, Ridgewood Stables Double Jay and Circle M Farms Riskolater, who made the overnight journey from Louisville by the conventional method of rail. Due at the Baltimore Municipal Airport about 4 p. m., Daylight Time, was E. O. Stices On Trust, who has become a confirmed air traveler. E. O. Stice, the colts Continued on Page Thre* Quartet Checks In j For Rich Preakness Faultless, Riskolater and Double Jay Arrive by Rait; On Trust Planes to Course Continued from Page One owner, arrived in Baltimore early today and plans to supervise his colts arrival. | Faultless, who finished third in the j Derby; Riskolater, eleventh, and Double . Jay, twelfth, increased to seven the number of Derby starters who now have arrived -safely at the Maryland Jockey Clubs course. Jet Pilot, brilliant victor of the ] Derby; Phalanx, who was second; Cosmic | Bomb and Bullet Proof all arrived in fine . condition early yesterday. By way of becoming acclimated with their new surroundings, Jet Pilot, Phalanx and Cosmic Bomb were on the fast track , for leisure gallops this morning. Jet Pilot, the sleek chestnut son of Blenheim II. — Black Wave, wasnt exactly in strange surroundings because it was at Pimlico that the stout-hearted colt scored two of his most important triumphs of 1946. It was over the Pimlico track last May that Jet Pilot gave first indication he was to develop into a performer of stakes caliber when he accounted for the Pimlico Nursery Stakes. He returned to Pimlico in the fall to score an impressive victory in the one mile and a sixteenth Pimlico Futurity. Mrs. Elizabeth Graham, justly proud owner of Jet Pilot, is expected to arrive in Baltimore, Friday, to remain for the Preakness running. The colts gallop this morning was supervised by Tom Smith, the taciturn conditioner of the Maine Chance Farm thoroughbreds. Looks Good in Gallop Phalanx, whose great charge from last place to finish second in the Derby running retained for him his host of admirers, looked razor sharp during his gallop and his glistening bay coat reflected the wonderful condition he has obtained under the splendid handling of trainer Syl Veitch. Like Jet Pilot, Phalanx is no complete stranger to the Pimlico course, for it was in last years one mile and a sixteenth Walden Stakes that the fine colt lost his rider just when he was launching a charge to the leaders. Meanwhile, it was revealed by trainer John Gaver that Greentree Stables handsome colt, Blue Border, would not start in Saturdays race. In declaring his fine charge, Gaver said that he had waited in New York for a week for a fast track to give the colt an extended trial, but that he never got it, and consequently Blue Border is not ready for a race as exacting as the one and three-sixteenths miles Preakness, Gaver added, however, that should Wide Wing and Tailspin show to advantage in todays Survivor Stakes, one or the other would carry the Greentree banner in the week-end classic. Although todays one mile and a sixteenth Survivor Stakes was expected to definitely eliminate one or two of the lesser Preakness candidates and track conditions on Saturday will govern the fate of at least one other probable, it remained fairly certain that the cast for Saturdays renewal of the one mile and three-sixteenths run would be the largest in many years. Maryland Jockey Club officials still needed more than two hands to sum up the list of probable starters at the moment and indeed, already have completed plans for the installation of extra starting gates should the field comprise more than 14 starters. Summing up briefly, the probable Preakness field now comprises Jet Pilot, Phalanx, Cosmic Bomb, Bullet Proof, King Bay, On Trust, Riskolater, Faultless, Double Jay, Golden Bull, Uncle Remus, Tavistock, Re-pand, M i t y m e, Wide Wing, Tailspin, Secnav, Cornish Knight and Owners Choice. Five in the above group are rated very doubtful starters with Golden Bull, Tavistock, Repand, Mityme and Owners Choice falling into that category. Secnav, according to trainer H. A. Luro, will start only if the track is fast. Double Jay pulled up very sore following his disappointing Derby performance, but trainer Duke McCue didnt appear too concerned when he supervised the unloading of his charge this morning. CHURCHILL DOWNS, Louisville, Ky., May 6. — If the Santa Anita Derby winner On Trust should fail to give a good account of himself in Saturdays Preakness Stakes at Pimlico, his owners, trainer, groom and everyone connected with him will attribute a "below tops" effort to the loss of the companionship of "Bill," canine mascot of the stable. Bill disappeared a short time before On Trust left this track for Staniford Airport, from where the California colt and his entourage took off on a fast flight to Baltimore and needless to say, his loss was a blow to the entire party.
