Mate Me Provides Upset In Defeating Uncle Rob Lottie Wolf Racer Turns In Game Score at Churchill Downs CHURCHILL DOWNS, Louisville, Ky., May 6. — Mate Me, a four-year-old son of Mate and Mayanel, carried Mrs. Lottie Wolfs silks to a surprise and game victory here today in the High Time Purse, one of the better offerings on a well-balanced program. Taken to the extreme outside by jockey Claude Hooper for the stretch run, Mate Me was along in the last sixteenth of the six furlongs sprint to defeat Lucas B. Combs favored Uncle Rob by a half-length margin, while just a nose back Mrs. Reid Luginbuels Beneva ran third, and Wallace Renards well-regarded Sweet Comet finished fourth in the field of eight starters. Making his first start since a successful campaign at the New Orleans Fair Grounds, Mate Me carried his 116 pounds burden over the firm footing in 1:12%. Overlooked by the majority of the crowd of about 12,000 on hand for the sport, the Wolf colt was good for 6.40 in the straight "tote" pool. Beneva was first to show in front when starter Ruby White sent the High Time band away from the stalls but Sweet Comet moved up strongly after the break and assumed a length lead at the initial quarter marker. Sweet Comet and Beneva then engaged each other until well inside the stretch with Mate Me and Uncle Rob always racing within striking distance. Sweet Comet faltered after making the pace to the last eighth and Beneva reached the lead momentarily between calls while Unci Rob began his bid from fourth place and Mate Me started his challenge from third and on the outside. Sweet Comet gave way nearing the finish and Beneva continued stoutly while Uncle Rob, who had a rather rough journey, also loomed up menacingly. In a sharply waged duel, Mate Me nipped Beneva and the Wolf racer then held on determinedly enough to best the fast-finishing Uncle Rob. Beneva was a close up third and Sweet Comet, who made the pace for the major portion of the trip, wound up a soundly beaten fourth.
