Swift Stakes Draws I Will and Donor Top Duo of Eleven In Belmont Event Seven-Eighths Distance Is Suitable to Both; Tavistock And Owners Choice Also Go BELMONT PARK, Elmont, L. I., N. Y., May 6. — The speedier, if not the most enduring of the three-year-olds, are slated to vie at Belmont Park tomorrow in the forty-sixth running of the Swift Stakes, a seven-furlong dash for a prize of 5,000 in added money. Eleven have been named for the Swift, which is the third of four stakes to be run over the flat during this first week of the Belmont spring meeting, and the race gains considerable interest by the presence of Deering Howes Donor in the overnight entries. This son of Chal-ledon — Orissa received a few votes as juvenile colt of the year at the end of the 1946 season after having won five stakes, including the Sanford and Albany at Saratoga and the Champagne on the Widener course here. While the colt has been working well for his seasonal debut, he has his work cut out for him tomorrow in having to cope with Jaclyn Stables I Will. That son of Roman — Breathless won the second and slower division of the Wood Memorial a couple of weeks ago, showing unexpected stamina. Last year he was good enough to win the Great American, Wakefield and United States Hotel Stakes. George Odoms charge will probably be favored at about even money in the Swift, though seven furlongs on the main course at Belmont is a severe test and the thought exists in some quarters that I Will will need help in the final sixteenth. All Carry Scale Weight All of the candidates for the Swift will carry scale weight of 126 pounds. The other nine are composed of Wheatley Stables Intrepid, Larry Gottliebs Warden Jr.. ■Trio Stables Resistant, Marlet Stables Kerry, George D. Wideners Half Hour. Walter P. Chryslers Brabancon, C. V. Whitneys Khyber Pass, Mrs. Walter M. Jeffords Tavistock, and Mrs. John D. Hertz Owners Choice. Kerry, Owners Choice and Tavistock all raced rather obscurely in the Chesapeake Stakes at Havre de Grace, with the first named making the best showing. However, the distance of the Swift is somewhat in favor of the speedy but faint-hearted Owners Choice. Intrepid, Warden Jr. and Half Hour all won modest races at Jamaica and appear to be an improving trio. Half Hour was making the best showing. However, the distance of the Swift is somewhat in favor of the speedy but fainthearted Owners Choice. Intrepid, Warden Jr., and Half Hour all won modest races at Jamaica and appear to be an improving trio. Half Hour was making his racing debut when he stumbled at the gate, then scored by four lengths over Stage Kid, who was taken back immediately after the start. Warden Jr. also beat Sarge Kid in his last appearance, but with less ease, while Intrepid merely breezed in his lone effort at six furlongs, but had little to beat. So far as demonstrated class is concerned, this edition of the Swift appears strictly a two-horse race between I Will and Donor, with the former having the advantage of a couple of races under his belt. Either of these colts rate potentially, at least, as good as any of the previous winners of this stake since it has been run at Belmont Park, where the most noted winners have been Polydor, Chestnut Oak, Flag Pole, Sation, Mr. Bones and Slide Rule. Incidentally, the 1942 winner, Bright Willie, won the first race of this Belmont meeting yesterday, while carrying a 0,000 claiming tag and finding no takers.
