djyBBBBBBBBBF: Calumet Farm Colt Outgames Mighty Story in Stretch Duel Piersons Strong Ride Big Factor in Arlington Score; Runs Mile Distance in 1 :35 ARLINGTON PARK, Arlington Heights, 111., June 26. The Calumet Farm, unsuccessful in nine previous attempts to reach the charmed circle during the current meeting, finally crashed through when its Fervent, tiny colt who makes up for his lack- of stature with speed and courage, won the eighth running of the Equipoise Mile before a week-end gathering of 24,326 here this afternoon. The flashy colt. driven to his utmost by the veteran N. Leroy Pier-son, clearly outgamed John Marschs Mighty Story in a stirring stretch -drive to win by a nose, while three-quarters of a length farther back came Augustus and Nahms Loujac, with a surprisingly good effort. Fervent shouldered the top impost of the 11 thoroughbreds who competed in the 0,000 event and raced the mile in 1:35 over a racing strip that was fast, but not within several fifths of second of the speed it acquired earlier in the week. He ran coupled with his companion, Faultless, and was favorite, paying .20. Rider Exercises Good Judgment Had it not been for Piersons fine judgment throughout the journey it is doubtful if Fervent would have beaten the gray Marsch colorbearer. The San Antonio, Texas, reinsman had Fervent away on his toes, gained the lead, but immediately took back. He saved ground along the rail on the turn then swung out between Delegate and Mighty Story in the stretch, a maneuver that was timed with split-second precision. After Fervent relinquished the lead after the start, Stud Poker, Star Reward, Noble One and Delegate engaged in a red-hot fight. Their positions changed several times along the back-stretch. Stud Poker was the first to wilt under the pressure and when Delegate made a quick move Star Reward and Noble One dropped back. Marsch Horse Passes Delegate But Mighty Story, now possibly in the best form of his career, had very definite designs on victory and swept past Delegate on the turn into the stretch. While making this impressive gesture, Mighty Story made the mistake of swinging out slightly. And it was here that Pierson grasped the victorious opportunity. In a flash he hauled out from the rail and dashed between Delegate and Mighty Story and from there to the last step it was one of the most exciting struggles of the week,.Pierson and Tony Skoronski employing every ounce of energy to urge their charges. As they neared the sixteenth pole, it appeared that they were so tightly locked that they couldnt be separated, but Fervent wrested a slight advantage, then held it to the wire. Loujac, who has been plagued by hard luck since last season as a two-year-old, probably would have been the longest odds in the race had he not been coupled with Eternal Reward. He turned in what easily was the finest performance of his .career. Fervents victory added 3,000 to the Calumet coffers, the gross purse being 3,800. It was the stables second victory in the race since it was inaugurated, Sun Again having annexed the purse in 1944. Armed, the worlds leading money-winning Continued on Page Three MRS. E. D. JACOBS Her worlds money-winning champion moved up another notch toward his million-dollar goal when he won Saturdays Aqueduct Handicap. Fervent Captures Equipoise by Nose Outgames Mighty Story in Thrilling Stretch Duel at Arlington Before 24,326 i Continued from Page One gelding, however, failed in a pair of attempts during the last two years. The race, for the most part, was cleanly run. Faultless ran into some trouble at the head of the stretch, but. he was a beaten horse at the time. A band of excellent juvenile prospects competed in the five and one-half furlong River Forest Purse and it was the Afton Villa Farms Jacks Town who proved best. Ridden by the veteran, Charles Swain, the bay son of Johnstown Sun Gamonia closed with a rush through the final stages to score going away by a couple of lengths. Mrs. Ada L. Rices Model Cadet, who pressed the pace throughout, finished gamely to beat the pacemaking Belin, owned by Clifford Mooers, for the place. Jacks Town, who was purchased out of last seasons Keeneland yearling sales, for ,500, has proven himself to be a bargain, and if he maintains the form shown today may be a threat in future stakes. William H. Veenemans Phar Mon, on the strength of a powerful effort against Mighty Story and Delegate here earlier in the week, was backed into l-to-2 favoritism for the third, and he managed to score, although he was as straight as the proverbial string and under strong pressure by Steve Brooks to accomplish the trick. Torrance C. Melroses Mel Hash closed with an exciting rush after being apparently well beaten early and failed reaching his goal by a half a length, while the Calumet Farms Whirl Some was a similar distance farther back and closing strongly. Phar Mon raced the six furlongs in 1:10. He was hustled out of the gate in front, but never at any time could steal away into a long lead from Piet, who pressed the issue. When Piet stopped to a walk, Mel Hash and Whirl Some unleased their- best speed. Whirlsome Modesty Hopeful Whirl Some, who was making her first start since last November, is prepping for next Saturdays Modesty Stakes, and todays effort showed that she probably will be mighty hard to handle in that stakes. Robert E. Cudahy, provided the winner of the ,000 Scarsdale Handicap when his grand and game filly, Tre Vit, sped to victory over the Calumet Farms Pep Well, while the Brown Hotel Stables Tidy Sum was third in the six-horse field. The four-year-old brown daughter of Tiger Wisk-over came charging down the stretch with excellent speed and courage to score by a half a leigth. She picked up 112 pounds, most of which was Tony Skoronski, and raced the six furlongs in 1:10. The battle for the early lead found Pad Lock, Hot And High and Tidy Sum match-1 ing strides, while Tre Vit and Pep Well wisely avoided the blistering pace. It wasnt until the field had straightened away for the drive that the leaders, comparatively exhausted, began to give ground, and there Pep Well, finding no room on the inside, swung out and took over, apparently on his way to victory. Tre Vit, however, was still to be reckoned with and was finding her best stride. She quickly passed the speed horses of the dash, then gradually wore down the Calumet representative in the filial sixteenth. .
