Vulcans Forge Carries Off Providence Stakes Favorite Overcomes Trouble and Goes On to Down Reborn by Neck NARRAGANSETT PARK, Pawtucket, R. I., June 26. C. V. Whitneys Vulcans Forge had to be much the best to take down the winners share of 0,450 in the third running of the Providence Stakes at Narragansett Park this afternoon before a crowd of 20,757. The chestnut son of Mah-moud Burning Blight was up in the final yards of the mile and one-sixteenth test to earn a neck decision over D. A. Rosen-baums Reborn. Mr. Buster, owned by the Rarco Stable, finished third, two lengths father back and a nose before A. J. Sack-etts Gasparilla. The running of the Providence was a rough trip for at least three of the 10 starters as the riders vied for favorable positions soon after the start. Vulcans Forge equalled the best time for the stake, when he registered 1:44 Vs over a fast racing strip, the time set last year when Mrs. R. L. Gerrys Young Peter took the event. Held at odds on by the majority of patrons, Vulcans Forge paid .40. The start of the Providence was effected in front of the stand with all but Woodlyn Stables Little Bobby getting away in good fashion. Little Bobby tarried slightly and lunged to the inside as the others drew away. Shelby Clark was alert and had the Eton blue and brown silks of the Whitney establishment away first but immediately Continued on Page Three Vulcans Forge Carries Off Providence Stakes Favorite Overcomes Trouble and Goes On to Down Reborn by Neck Continued from Page One took his charge under light restraint, content with allowing Mr. Buster to set the pace. Around the clubhouse turn, Mr. Buster opened a two-length lead, followed by War Raider, Reborn, Loser Weeper and Vulcans Forge. Before entering the backstretch those in the rear of the leaders began bunching with Vulcans Forge caught in between. Clark steadied his mount remarkably and bided his time until straightened down the backstretch. Mr. Buster hung onto his lead as he reached the far turn and Sisto began urging the Shifting Sands colt. "Red" Howell on Loser Weeper began moving on the outside and midway on the turn was on even terms under a drive. The two remained together for a short distance with Jimmy Finnegan on Reborn easing his mount closer along the rail. Entering the final lane, Reborn got through on the rail to show a neck in front of Mr. Buster. Loser Weeper was through and Vulcans Forge started to respond to Clarks urging. At this point, Dole was moving and came over sharply on the Whitney colt, but he refused to take offense and kept plodding on until clear, then set out after Reborn. Mr. Buster began to wilt nearing the sixteenth pole. Vulcans Forge finally overtook Reborn inside the final sixteenth and edged away gradually in a thrilling finish. Mr. Buster, tiring after setting the pace, managed to hold on long enough to deprive Gasparilla of third money. Gasparilla apparently had no excuse as he remained back clear of any interference until making his move on the rail. His path was not exactly clear but Warren Mehrtens did the best he could with the space and time to do it in. Irving Gushens Andys Glory was the victim of an unforseen accident entering the backstretch. The Andy K. colt was going smoothly under young Picou when it appeared he crossed his legs and nearly went down. No one was close enough at the time to cause the misfortune. The lad did well to save the colt from going down. Picou was the riding star again this afternoon with three winning mounts.
