Fancy Flyer, a three-year-old Sky Raider colt who races for the partnership or Graham and Byrum, drove to a hard-jearned score in the Fox Covert Purse, at one mile over the Lewis Turf Course, which was featured at this Motor City course this afternoon. The winner weaved his way between horses from a rather slow beginning to come to the outside for the stretch drive and, in answering the call of jockey Pat Milligan for his best effort in the run to the wire, swerved in and mildly bothered J. F. Smiths Montayr, who had been in command most of the way, but who was beaten when the interference occurred. J. Duff, who rode Montayr, lodged a claim of foul against the winner, which was dismissed. The duel of the first two saw them five additional lengths before Fertile Lands, who was third for Grissom and. Sherman in the field of nine .sophomores. The grass course was fast .and Fancy Flyer covered the one mile in 1:37 to return .40. Todays victory was the second triumph for Fancy Flyer at the meeting and he earned ,500 of the 0,000 purse, the same amount he had garnered by winning the Sport of Kings Handicap earlier at the meeting. Montayr Draws Clear Settoo showed the way briefly around the first turn but was soon dislodged by Montayr who found that his closest rival was Henry Forrests Cotton Joe, who had ranged alongside on the backstretch. Reaching the final turn Montayr was able to draw clear and it was at this juncture that Fancy Flyers presence became prominent as he reached third place between horses. Cotton Joe could not keep up and in the home lane it was obvious that the duel would be between Montayr and Fancy Flyer. The latter inched to Montayr and he had him beaten when he bore in to create the cause of the foul claim. The main course racing strip was in a drying out condition to be rated "good" for the afternoon, while occasional clouds held a mild threat of rain that did not materialize as 18,490 patrons witnessed very interesting sport. Sun Herod, racing for the Detroit partnership of Grissom and Sherman and generally thought to be at his best over a distance of ground, created a surprise when he came from close to the early pace to swing around the outside in the stretch and drive to a one-length margin at the end of the six-furlong Border City Handicap that vied with the feature in interest. The winner of the Man o War Handicap on opening day of the meeting, earned his tally at the direct expense of Louis J. Hol-lenbachs doughty favorite Roi Rouge, who put in a determined bid in the late stretch but was unable to cope with the late burst of speed of Sun Herod. Just a head farther back in the thrilling finish came Mrs. George C. Whites game Bright Steel who had raced the well fancied Johns Pride into submission in a spirited duel from the backstretch to take a short lead at the furlong marker. Master Bid, stablemate of the winner was fourth and Johns Pride a Withering fifth. George Monson sent the winner over the dull track in 1:11, the fastest time recorded on the drying out strip during the afternoon and he was overlooked in the wagering to return 0.20. Miss Brand secured room on the inside entering the stretch to drive to a nose decision over Total Victory as Ships Pass was third in the first race. Here Total Victory bore in somewhat in the stretch drive, bothering Ships Pass a little and pinching her back.
